Looking for accent color suggestions and...

by Linda Krull
We are in the process of painting our living room and adjoining dining room. The wall color is Behr Natural Twine and I like the deep red of the pillow as an accent color but my husband...not so much. Any suggestions for another color to add or replace? Also I plan on removing these funky room dividers - any ideas what we could put in there place? I want something there to differentiate the two spaces. Any and all comments are appreciated :)

Ah, the husband dilemma...lol! What I typically try to do is ask my hubby's opinion, but then try to incorporate his likes into mine (lets just say that mine typically win...). In your case, perhaps some patterned pillows that have the red you like with a color he likes as well? Since you are working with such a soft neutral color palette, the choices are endless. This pillow has your twine color along with a jewel tone blue in an Ikat pattern.Using your red choice as well, you could build an entire room around a color like this! https://www.jossandmain.com/The-Decor-Shop-Bala-Pillow~PICO1023~E18723.html?keyword=pillow As far as the partitions go, I would take them down and live with it as is for awhile. I think you will find that once you are not used to something being there you won't miss it. The room will be divided naturally by the set up of the furniture in both spaces, and the elimination of the panels will allow for an unobstructed traffic flow from one space to the other.

try behr color smart paint suggestions: http://www.behr.com/consumer/ColorDetailView/S310-3 they show colors that would match the natural twine. You can try it out on a similar room on this site and drag your mouse over the walls of that room to color with twine and an accent color to get an idea; so love this site

I really like the tan/dark red combo. My bathrm is beige walls and I found a nice, affordable wall art at Bed, Bath that incorporates both.when you take downtnthe rm dividers, how about a bookcase that is partially open, with columns or dowels, or some kind of buffet/server?

@Polly Zieper We were thinking of bookcases with columns but I kind of like your buffet idea .........

I agree with Sue about the pillows, more pattern! As far as the dividers go, maybe you can rearrange your furniture so that the furniture placement is the divider between the 2 rooms.

I have just remodeled my living room with all brown furniture except one red accent chair. My curtains, throws, and other items are also red.I need one more accent color any suggestions?

You need a darker contrasting color, not tan or that family. Maybe one focal wall in the red. How about a pillar in cream or off white for a divider, or a double sided shelf in a dark wood. Patterned drapes would add interest eith some of the focal wall color on it. How about another color that coordinates with the focal wall for the other wall. Repeat these colors in pillowsย and an area rug. Have fun!

@Janice Pruett How about gold for some accent? There are so many shades. How about take that throw and cushions or small pillows from the furniture to store or fabric shop. Black and red are great together but maybe not with brown? I say try gold (brass pieces?), black, gray and choose one. Maybe gold and cream in pattern(s) for pillows, picture mats or rugs. Try estate sales for interesting pieces. Invest small and alternate after a few months. Rotate rather than replace.

@Linda Krull If you insist on removing the dividers, and they can be painted for outdoor use, how about lay horizontal to define a garden space, or stand up for climbing plants.

Love that large window in the LR. Would take out the divider to make the area more spacious and continuous. You could get a sofa table to put behind your sofa with a real/artificial tree-like plant near the wall. Maybe husband would go for turquoise or teal for accents if he doesn't care for red.

The paint color would be good with any number of colors - green, teal, turquoise, shades of blue or, the red! Also, you could use two other colors, just use more of one than the other.

Take out Room Dividers. The shadow of the design is distracting. .. Colors: Look for a overall pattern with colors you like for your Drapes..( you could hang a Single panel on either side of the Window with more Relaxed Sheers in between ) with your touch of Red + several other colors.. Navy Blue, Forest Green Brick, would be more to your Husbands liking? or patterned/colorful Pillow Covers, a Throw in colors you like ? or more earth tones ? need some kind of color in there.. You could pick up a color in a Painting or Photo too..

Would your husband be agreeable to a more rust or orange/persimmon?(I wouldn't call it that, though.)
