Update family room

The walls are a soft gold with match drapes - I don't really want to paint as its a very large area. I have brown leather couch & 2 linen white chairs. The tile on the floor is in shades of beige. I need an area rug to pull it together, 9 x 12 would work. Suggestions?

since the couch and chairs have to stay and everything is so "brown", I would find a rug I liked and pick a brighter color in the rug and use the color for accent pieces. Your couch and chair give a casual feel, but your tables and drapes are rather formal. I would replace them if possible.

Your overall style seems to revolve around Traditional so when looking for a rug or other accessories keep that in mind. When it comes to accent colors, you're limited only by your own tastes because the other colors in the room are neutral. That'll give you lots of options. I would look for floral prints in rugs & throw pillows mixed in with a few new and updated table top accessories in whatever color you choose. Then of course, post pics :-)

I would look or a multicolored bright rug. A Kilim or Persian style, perhaps on a rug site like dash and albert

you really need some colour, maybe something with orange, red or yellow or combination!

Change your drapes also with brighter color to accent a brighter floor rug. Maybe there's a place that could dye the drapes depending on the fabric, and how much you want to keep them. There are several online stores that have nice drapes at a cost effective price.

@Carolyn S. I have seen people stencil a design (which could be a bright color) with fabric paint on drapes completely changing it with non trad design

I'd use a navy area rug. It would ground the room but add a pop of color.

Pick out a few "colors" in your room, such as in the picture over the fireplace, or something in a color you really like. Make sure whatever rug you choose has each of the colors in it that you enjoy. If you have to, buy a small rug the same as a large rug that you like and bring it home to see if it goes with the room. Or see if you can get a remnant from the sales person to bring home. Make sure you like it or you won't be happy. Rugs are the soul of the room so make sure you can live with it.

I'd look for an area rug with some pink/dusty rose in it, since you have the flower wall art already (is there green in the wall art?leaves?)that would give you another color to bring in, then I'd look for other accessories with some pink/rose, a picture frame, clock, vase, knickknacks for the mantle, candlesticks, throw pillows, etc.I'd look at Marshall's, TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning and HomeGoods for a rug. their prices are reasonable and they often have odd discontinued or returned home decor stuff.I've found wall art and home accessories like those I mentioned at Goodwill and salvation Army. another thought: at Michael's or AC Moore you can get unfinished wood items and paint them to go with your fam rm-a big capital letter to represent your last name, picture frames, a key holder with hooks, coasters, mirrors, a wooden 'plaque' with coat hooks, and lots of other stuff

I agree with the comments above. I would add a colorful area rug with a minimum pattern and use colorful accent pillows as well. In the kitchen I would add color as well with something like a lg ceramic rooster, big bowl of colorful fruit etc. You have a beautiful home, make it your own and enjoy!

Relooking at your photos, the drapes are fine but when I look at the second photo I see such darkness in the kitchen cabinets, and then the white door really stands out. It would be nice if you could lighten the top cabinet doors, or have glass put in them. With all the dark brown it looks like a cave that needs more bright colors. Maybe even a throw on the sofa to break up all the brown.

I was thinking a light turquoise and maybe coral would brighten it up .light colors would help. If your hooked on gold turq, gold, white and brown with a simple design like chevron or stripe painted on the drapes with fabric paint.

I would change the drapes to a pattern with a bright color in them. (I would use red) and make matching throw pillows. I would continue on with the accent color with silk flowers, etc. and although your mantle is beautiful, I would also add something to the middle with your accent color, along with the pink color from your picture above the mantle.
