Twine Wrapped Handles - an Easy Update to Old Hardware

I'm working on making this old cabinet into a base for a corner counter top area in our cottage kitchen, but it needs some work. I've already worked on painting it, but I needed a way to update the handles. I tested with a magnet to make sure they weren't brass and worth cleaning (they weren't), so then I thought about painting them. Instead, I came up with a cheap and easy way to add a little nautical charm to our lake house cottage.
This cabinet has been sitting in the garage as tool storage for 10 years. My grandpa bought it at a garage sale - who knows what it was used for with that owner. Either way, this piece has been around for a while, and it sure shows.
I used jute twine and hot glued it to the back of the handle.
I tightly wrapped the twine around, applying hot glue in small sections as I wrapped.
I find jute to be a little softer to the touch than sisal, so although they look "prickly", they really aren't uncomfortable to touch.
Feel free to check out the full post on my blog. I'll also be sharing the full corner counter top area and some finished pictures of the cabinet.
