Do you ever trim hydrangeas?

I have been told to never trim my hydrangeas. Is this correct?

Quite the contrary! Hydrangeas thrive when they're cut back! But you need to cut them back in the late summer early fall so that they can set some new buds for the next years bloom! Some varieties are breed to bloom on new growth so those can be cut back anytime!

Unless they are frozen, the blooms come from last year's growth. But if you want to shape the Bush, you can trim them...but the branch you trim may not have blooms till the next year. Also, mine got caught in a freeze this winter, so I trimmed it back severely, and waited to see if it would come back, and it is growing like gangbusters. May not have flowers this year, but next year should be awesome!

In the south, we are told to cut them back when the colors have faded but are not dry. If you wait until they look horrible in winter to cut them you will lose the blossoms for that next season.

Yes, most Hydrangeas bloom year after year on the old wood, if you trim them, you will not get any blooms, until after the next time you leave the wood from the previous year,.

Not all Hydrangeas bloom year after year on old wood.  Some can be cut back, but you need to look at the specific type you have.

I have tree hydrangeas that I was afraid to deadhead last fall for fear of freezing. If I cut off just the dead blooms now will I not get any blooms this year? New leaves are coming strong.
