Do mint plants need a lot of sun?

What kind of mint plants? They can tolerate partial shade. I have grown several kinds. I love catmint since it has a long bloom season and looks like lavender. Other mints have been extremely invasive.

Can I suggest planting mint in a container, it really is very invasive as Ann said.

If you have a wild mint, they prefer more shade than most, but as the others have said, unless you wish to cover a difficult area, keep it in a container or it will take over.

@Frances Washington in my experience with mint they thrive just about anywhere but do need some sun. They are quite invasive, so the suggestion of keeping them in a container is an excellent one - preferably one that has no holes in the bottom.

That's right, sun and part shade, but beware if you don't pot them. Besides, if you pot your mint, you can try placing it different areas and see where it grows best for you. We used to plant ours under an outdoor tap because it loves water.

It's like kudzu. Can't get rid of it, so it will possibly grow in any condition.

I have 2 kinds of mint here, spearmint & orange mint (OMG good!). I planted them in containers near the house where they get a fair amount of sun but are shaded most of the day. They have flourished, escaped their containers & run amok all over the place. Guess I shouldn't have let them go to seed......but I don't mind because my yard is woodsy-wild anyhow.
The best place to plant mint is in a bed, maybe next to the house or something, where it's separated from the rest of the yard by a concrete walkway or in a cement or brick planter bed......even then you may not be able to contain it.

They can tolerate sun depending on how hot your summers get. Afternoon shade preferably. Would love to be planted by a drippy faucet :)
