Need help with exterior colors for new house

We recently purchased our home and the siding and trim needs to be replaced. I hate the current siding color, but as you can see in the photo, there's cedar shingle (which we're not getting rid of) plus brown soffit and fascia (which we're also not replacing) and a bright white screened in porch. Any ideas for exterior colors that won't look hideous. I was thinking just making the whole thing white with brown trim, but we also seem to have a boxelder bug problem, so we're wanting to make the exterior a darker color since that is apparently less attractive to them.

Congratulations on your new home! I immediately envisioned this home with pretty medium-toned sage green siding. It would go great with the brown tones of the roof and cedar, and make the white railings pop. I would also consider putting decorative white shutters on each side of the 2nd floor windows.

I guess I would go with a green siding and a red door to make the railings pop :)

Lovely home! If your cedar shingles will weather to more of a gray, take this into account. If the porch railings are paintable, getting rid of the white would be a good thing. But if they are vinyl, then add some white elsewhere. Either way, I would definitely paint the lattice a darker color that will blend with your beautiful stacked stone, and thus make it disappear.

Thanks all! It's like you were reading my mind. I was thinking either green or dark putty gray. But I'm totally for the green now! We're going to do Hardie siding I think in one of their colors, so we're a bit limited in our options, but there's a really nice green to choose from that I like.

This website has great resources for color ideas that are appropriate to your home's age. www.oldhouseguy.com We're contemplating purchasing this home. This could give you an idea about this color scheme. (BTW, the porch and steps are new so they're not painted or stained yet.)
