Coat Rack and Bundt Pan Repurposed as Elevated Garden Container

Adventures In Junking

This wasn't the original plan for either piece, but the fun and success of repurposing depends on being open to innovation.
A few months ago I rescued this old coat rack that one of my neighbours left curbside. My original vision was for a fun outdoor hat rack for my collection of fun and funky hats. But when I got it home I realized why it had been left at the side of the road.
It was wonkier than I had originally realized. I tried trying Molly my scarecrow to it but it was too top heavy. I didn't think it would be kind to my neighbours to put it back at the curb, so I started taking it apart (it screws together in 3 sections) to donate to a neighbour's wood pile.
As soon as I got it apart and I saw that screw sticking up from the top, I saw a whole new future for it. I do a lot of container gardening and I'm always on the lookout for ways to add some height variation to the rows of plant pots. Using stairs, a birdcage on a stand... Now a new feature. First a little slap and tickle with the paint brush and my ever-present supply of white paint.
But as I was waiting for the first layer of paint to dry, I saw my bundt pan sitting in the corner where I left it last summer when I brought it home. At the same time I found it, I had found an iron lamp stand that fit it (if I left the bulb socket in place). I had never gotten around to finishing and planting it; it was late in the season when I found it.
It took some persuading my wonderful neighbour that truly wanted holes drilled into what he saw as a perfectly good bundt pan, but then it took seconds to put the drainage holes in it.
I had originally planned to feed my white fetish by marrying the base with a white plant pot, but the bold white and blue is wonderfully nautical look (although I suspect by mid-June whatever I plant will be spilling over the sides hiding much of the pan).
