White cabinets

Marie
by Marie
Should we paint our cabinets white and if so what wall color would be good to go with it? I'm wanting a cottage cabin feel but to brighten up the space.
This is how it looks currently.
We did have it yellow but hated it!

  • Yes! I always vote for white! I recently had a custom color mixed at Home Depot to match "Ikea white" furniture. I love it! I have used it on a dining set, a plank wall, and to re-do a large mirror. Now anything I paint coordinates with my Ikea pieces (very budget and kid-friendly). It's not a bright stark white... has cream/almost yellow undertones, but I think it would look great in your kitchen. Here's a link to the custom color: http://bit.ly/1BsGFK5 Good luck!!

    • @Marie This looks much better as the floor really accents and compliments the white. The brushed nickle hardware on the cabinets are a nice modern touch and the white of the cabinets takes your eye away from the flatness of the doors. It almost starting to take on that country shaker style but yet is holding on to the modern look, It's looking like whats called a "transitional" style which is becoming very stylish these days. A color I use a lot of for my base painting for simple faux finishes on some walls is an old Sherwin Williams color called "China Doll" (1101) you might want to try in a "Satin" on the walls.

How about Antique white, everything goes with it, but it is not so stark.

    • @Marie I agree that bright yellow had to go as you have too many other things going on. A black and white stove, white microwave on a cart, the black canisters on the shelf above the stove etc. That lonely black iron skillet hanging on the wall needs to go and so does that strainer hanging on the cabinet. Just by removing and/or placing these things elsewhere are going to open up the area. I agree with painting the cabinets as they are to flat looking with hardly any detail and look too 1950'ish. White would surely obscure this and make it look more modern as the style today is straight line contemporary/modern. The black is good as I have seen more of it including the painting of interior doors. There is quite a few things you can do here without costing a fortune that I think you would be thrilled with, but you have to take care of the things that immediately draws your attention. I would also change that ceiling fan and update it and get rid of whatever that is hanging from it.

yes, yes, yes!! And I feel you dilemma because I did the exact same thing. I went back and forth, back and forth..finally went for it and soooo glad I did! I used Martha Stewart Pickett Fence White and it was perfect for that type of feel. be sure to wash any greasy ones with tsp before you paint. If you have any heavy grain you don't want to seep through prime them with zinsser. Provided it is a smoke free home, poly coat them several coats to keep them from chipping over time. before the last coat of paint, use latex caulk to fill the dings, holes and joints between cabinets and they will disappear (white will make these imperfections jump out) and drum roll...I used regular laytex paint, not fancy or expensive stuff and it worked out great!

    • @Moxie C'mon I never said you did, I was describing the look of a distressed finished and the effects of a darker cabinets has below as opposed to the white ones and how it could close in the space. My comment was not pointed at you nor was I asking for your opinion. I am just bouncing ideas around of what my 40 years of experience has taught me and what has been seen in the last few years at the high end and middle side of interior design market levels is all, Adding distressing is what gives the cabinets a Shabby Chic/ French Country sort of feel that most men like and could help Marie to possibly get the idea of going with a darker bottom with her husbands approval. Of course this is just an option that I was adding to what you had said about painting them a darker color. However if he wanted to keep them all one color (which she does ) there is also the option of painting the table and chairs with the darker color as well because many kitchen islands are done this way and looks great also. The whole point here is not whether you like it or I like it, it's helping Marie with ideas that she and her husband may both like together. Does not matter what you like or what I like, it's what works for the clients. This is what I do and is my profession in the decorative arts, fine finishing, murals and fine arts by designing and consulting with ALL who is involved and who have to live with the decisions they make everyday.....Peace! Have a great Holiday.

Any good hardware store can mix it for you , maybe is a Home Depot colour? Or Rona ?

I would do a driftwood gray on the bottem and a white with a blue undertone for the top cabinets and a medium light color of your choice for the walls. ( your favourite color.)

What about a French Crème? Not quite white, creamy. My daughters cabinets are that color & they are just lovely. Anything will go with that.

I went through the same kind of indecision with our kitchen. Took the plunge and went white and my walls are a very soft butter yellow. Have loved it and it's time to redo the walls again. Great ease in cleaning cabinets too.

Benjamin Moore Linen or Shaker Beige looks awesome against the white cabinets. Then you can change accessories whenever you want. You can add a punch of color like the yellow or red with the accessories. Benjamin Moore matte finish is great on walls especially in the kitchen and bathroom, they clean up very easy.

Yes definitel white, and yes, definitely a creamy white rather than a stark white, and yes, there are a billion whites so go Maria Killam's website and google what she has to say about choosing the right white. Maria is world-known color expert and she's very generous sharing info on her site at MariaKillam.com. I think you're total on the right track with a country kitchen look and I think creamy white will brighten things up. This is my plan for my kitchen. And google "white country kitchens" to find some inspiration. And please post the results.

@Sandyc thank you so much I'll definitely check our her website!

Here is a great website from Pinterest for painting cabinets. The Ikea white is really a nice color. www.thekimsixfix.com/2012/08/how-to-paint-your-kitchen-cabinets.html

I would paint the cabinets white, but put some molding around the top cabinets like the bottom. The walls could be a soft coffee color, but paint the extras a black to match your stove and appliances. It will still look country, but do not use the easter colors to do it.

If I had to paint them it wouldn't be white I had a white kitchen and got so tired of it really fast. I would either go with a cream or even grey you should go to Houz.com and see some of the choices they have lots!

We painted our kitchen cabinets a stark white and the surrounding area a very pale green. It looks great and has the desired effect of making the kitchen and dinette very cheery and open looking. We also painted the living area walls a mild white; they were a dark wood paneling and again it made such a difference in light for the room. Sorry I don't remember exact colors.

We replace our old decrepit cupboards with new ( in the process now of a kitchen Reno) white cupboards with beadboard insert panels, we put up beadboard and painted it oatmeal , which is our backsplash area , behind the cupboards , we have a grey /nickel finish counter top . Some of our cupboard doors are glass with the squares, some are solid and we incorporated a hosier base cabinet into the mix. Dark wood like floor from Home Depot , Traffc master allure in Hickory . 3 walls in kitchen painted in oatmeal , 4 th wall will be painted Northern Wash , a bluey-grey green .

Go to the show Knock It Off on the Live Well Network's website, - www.livewellnetwork.com & look at what Monica & Jess did for 3 kitchens, which cost between $1,040 & $2,500 for them to renovate. The 1 kitchen/dining room cost $1,040 & they painted the walls mint & they painted both of the other 2 kitchens light blue, I think.

We bought samples yesterday!!! The two that we got are Pure White and Alabaster from SW! and I do believe Alabaster is the winner. the other almost looked blue beneath it.
    • Kenneth Shaw Kenneth Shaw on Apr 18, 2015
@Marie Yes, but did you check out the 3 kitchen's that Monica & Jess renovated over their past season on their show, - Knock It Off of the Live Well Network, - www.livewellnetwork.com, where most of the cost for their renovating is in new stuff, like new furniture, even down to new glass canisters & latte' cups with very little spent on stuff, like paint, - each of these 3 kitchens cost between $1,040 & $2,500 with the $1,040 kitchen renovation being a small gallery kitchen & dining room, so that couple got Monica & Jess to renovate 2 rooms for the price of 1 room.

Ok, Here's my 2 cents...1st ~ I would trim out the upper cabinets so that they match the bottom ones that way they have a more cohesive look. Then change the hardware to nickel knobs for drawers & simple nickel pulls for cabinets. 2nd ~ Paint the lower & upper cabinets the Alabaster color you wanted. For the walls, I would go for a pale color NOT pastel rather than a deep rich color...A dark color will make feel like a cave. 3rd ~ I would remove the board above the sink. Then add bead board & trim out each cabinet around the sink. You will also want to do the same w/ the end of the bottom cabinet. Those 3 sections will give you some more of the cottage feel. For the back splash I would do a white subway tile w/ light gray grout. 4th ~ I would trade out the short shelf for 2 longer ones & paint them black so they pop off the wall so you put your more decorative or seasonal decor on it. Last thing, I would put molding up around the room to make it look cleaner & neater. Hope this helps.
