Help please! What color for the front door?

Lynn Ware

We're remodeling this 1930's house. We have a new red metal roof & plan to keep the white siding. What would you suggest as a front door color? I love bright, bold colors!! Thanks!

Is that Roof and Soffits Red or Rust? Deep blue for me.
  • Jacqueline Jacqueline on Apr 13, 2015
Red door. There is something about a red door that is interesting. Our church painted the front door red and it speaks to people who drive by.
  • Lynn Ware Lynn Ware on Apr 13, 2015
Jjaycee, its more of a rust or barn red & I love the idea of blue! Jacqueline, my initial thought was red but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to match it well enough with the roof, plus my neighbor is painting her door door red. Thanks for the input! I also failed to mention that there are actually two front doors.
  • S. Roy S. Roy on Apr 13, 2015
My first thought was red, but after seeing the house with the red roof and soffits and the brick, I also would go with a deep blue!
  • Marion Nesbitt Marion Nesbitt on Apr 14, 2015
Love the style of your home although I might be tempted to paint the brick. I'm thinking a medium blue-green for the door would look good. As an aside, I would also edge out around your bushes, etc. to create nice crisp curvy line along the front which would further accentuate the great steps leading up to the door.
  • Becky Greenwald Becky Greenwald on Apr 14, 2015
I'd match the roof, maybe a shade or two darker, but if you love the blue, go with your heart.
  • OnBlissStreet OnBlissStreet on Apr 14, 2015
If you want to go bold, I would say Aqua. There is just something about aqua and red that melts my buttah.

That was my first thought- a nice deep teal... then once you get that stairway all cleaned up, paint the two planters the same to accentuate the stairs going up to the porch. You could really be ambitious and stencil the front of your steps with teal, blue and yellow! Fill the planters with yellow and orange-wow!

I like the name of your town. :D
  • Katrina Smalley Katrina Smalley on Apr 15, 2015
Deep brick red or deep fire engine red-stay in same color scheme as other house materials or it will stick out like a sore thumb instead of a 'wow'...then plant a red barberry bush on that empty right corner-perfect :)

  • Lisadoll Lisadoll on Oct 25, 2015
Wow! ❤️Your new red roof! ( mine's green among a sea of black roofs ) You said you love bold & bright ? ( of course you are going to choose these suggested shades that have a RED undertone, and the deep shade of each) ORANGE! Purple! Even a real deep pink, if you're daring! So it seems you husband gets a vote? Really? LOL! Okay then.. Husband colors: charcoal grey, deep bright blue, eggplant. Don't forget to paint up a swatch of each, and wait about a week.. The right one will eventually grab you!
  • Lisadoll Lisadoll on Oct 25, 2015
You know what? Here are some that I have used. Home Depot Marquis high gloss paint: Fresh Sawdust ( bright yellow gold) Death by Chocolate ( reddish brown) Corral brown ( med orangie brown) . The last two would please hubby and compliment the stone/brick.
  • Suellen Hintz Suellen Hintz on Jun 23, 2016
Royal blue. Mustardy yellow. Coral. Darkish green.

  • T. Martinelli T. Martinelli on Nov 07, 2016
    A soft buttery yellow,even a light blue & grey
  • Patsy Patsy on Nov 07, 2016
Crimson red is a beautiful color for your front door. Remember red draws a lot of heat from the sun.
  • Gin10721842 Gin10721842 on Nov 07, 2016
    red....no doubt about it!
  • Ann Marie Ann Marie on Dec 19, 2016

Not quite sure why everyone is suggesting red. With the red roof and the red brick, that's the last color I would suggest. I would want a contrasting color on the door. I would stay away from anything in the red family -- orange, pink, etc -- too close to the rest of the reds. I've always liked the combination of white, red and black. That would probably satisfy hubby as well. If you don't want a stark black, you could go with a shade of gray, which would be softer. I think painting the trim around the windows to match would make them pop a bit more too.

BTW, I love the style of your home -- always loved that Craftsman/bungalow style. I'm jealous ! lol

Let us know what you decide !

  • Bbunny42 Bbunny42 on Dec 19, 2016

Love your house! I'd vote black, charcoal, deep navy or yellow the shade of a duck and tie these together in shutters, window trim, etc. My two exterior doors are the yellow and it makes me smile every time I come through them. Like the idea of calling more attention to the steps too.

  • Dawn Dawn on Dec 19, 2016

really pretty home! I would paint your door black or red and add black shutters to match. I would also trim bushes down so that you can see the house better. I would not let them get taller than the porch.

  • Linda Linda on Dec 20, 2016

How about PURPLE? Purple in Chinese, brings good fortune.

  • Kj Kj on Dec 21, 2016

Black or deep blue shutters, with a golden rod or mustard yellow door.

  • Beverly J Raffaele Beverly J Raffaele on Dec 22, 2016

    Dark Red all day long...

  • Cat Cat on Dec 28, 2016

i like the dark grey idea. mix it up without throwing too much color in.

  • Ginger the farm gal Ginger the farm gal on Dec 28, 2016

I would be more concerned about a rail around the porch and off steps, especially for insurance and safety reasons, Paint idea could go red, white and blue, especially if you plan to put up a flag. Would also paint the concrete steps or a fresher concrete coat, might just do the trick, If the brick columns are faded or not the bold red on the roof, they too could use a fresh coat. Trim landscape will also add attraction to your new paint job. Enjoy your place and I can see the swing being a great place for an accent cushion for comfort.

  • Violet Violet on Dec 31, 2016

I would go with probably a steel gray door and window trim.

  • Gke10807631 Gke10807631 on Dec 31, 2016

I think a charcoal grey or black would look beautiful on your lovely home.

    Or maybe a navy blue.

  • Gail Gail on Jan 01, 2017

I too have a 1930s house that is all white. First of all, I LOVE your roof color! My house has black shutters, and I just painted the dirty, boring white door bright yellow (it's called Smiley Face yellow from Home Depot). In the Spring, I plan on taking the shutters down and painting them a medium green color. I love a country cottage look, so I love red, green, and yellow together. I have a wooden bench that I'm painting a berry red color that will go on the porch. A lot of different colors I know, but I think it will all blend considering that's the look I love. It all depends on YOUR style though. In the future, when my roof needs replacing, I will DEFINITELY consider a red roof! It looks FABULOUS!!

  • Theresa Stewart Theresa Stewart on Jan 09, 2017

A bright royal blue would bring a touch of color and whimsy to your entrance.

  • Joanne Grant Joanne Grant on Jan 09, 2017

Personally I think I would go with black front door and if you have shutters do the same. I'm having same issues...house is creamy yellow with green metal roof and I'm tired of my green shutters and white door..... ugh

    • Laura Rudgers Laura Rudgers on Jan 25, 2017

Have you tried anything in the orange family? Rusty orange might look very darling...

  • Eroque022810 Eroque022810 on Jan 09, 2017

Red! It would tie the roof with house. This looks like a bungalow is it? I'm glad that you are not destroying the outside although I would power wash the white paint off of brick columns.

  • Cindy Hagemann Cindy Hagemann on Jan 09, 2017

Red - definitely. I have a home with a large front porch and a red front door and it popped. Have fun with it!

  • Eroque022810 Eroque022810 on Jan 09, 2017

Oops your columns are natural great bonus! But I would do the screen door in red as well order them together. I can see geraniums in your future on each step and by front door.

    • Laura Rudgers Laura Rudgers on Jan 25, 2017

Yellows would give it a more cheery look, and be sure to paint the ceiling of your porch light blue, for luck!

  • Beth Ward Beth Ward on Jan 10, 2017

I would do a dusty purple almost going to magenta. My friend down the street did that. Wait, I did that too.

  • Shannon Shannon on Jan 11, 2017

Bright blue, yellow, black, or Pantone's 2017 color of the year- Greenery. Your house is adorable.

  • Jud7860714 Jud7860714 on Jan 11, 2017

I painted my front door a beautiful light teal. I love it. I think teal would be a good color for your front door.

  • BabyBoomerSC BabyBoomerSC on Jan 17, 2017

Teal or Navy Blue would look great.

  • Catherine Baker Catherine Baker on Jan 21, 2017

You have a red roof and red bricks already with your house and so if I were you, I would keep up the theme and not only have the door at least with a red trim if not completely red in a matching shade but would trim the windows in a matching colour as well. Right now, you have to really look to find both the windows and the doors.

Black with black dusters on windows .

  • Lisa Elias Lisa Elias on Jan 24, 2017

Def Black... Red would be to matchy-matchy...Black is bold but will not clash with any other colors on the house and look sophisticated...

    • JoEllen JoEllen on Feb 10, 2017

I'm in favor or "matchy" the fashion world finally stopped saying don't match make it pop and it looked like the devil.

  • Laura Rudgers Laura Rudgers on Jan 25, 2017

Yellow-gold, black or charcoal, a lovely Robin's Egg blue

  • Cheryl Cheryl on Jan 27, 2017

Navy or Turquoise front door. Add coordinating accents on window trim, window boxes, porch furniture and flowers. Nice house!

  • CeeJay CeeJay on Jan 28, 2017

I would like to see a darker brick/rust color on the door. Something between the roof color and the brick. I'd like to see the windows and door trimmed with another color, perhaps charcoal gray?

  • ALLYSON DUNCAN ALLYSON DUNCAN on Jan 31, 2017

If bright and bold are the way you want to go, I'd opt for a rich, bright turquoise. Years ago I never would have thought of red and turquoise together but I've seen quite a number of examples of that color combo over the last couple of years and it's impressive!

  • Che13264944 Che13264944 on Feb 04, 2017

    Deep Navy would add richness

  • Teresa Teresa on Feb 10, 2017

I would do either Red or a deep navy blue

  • Gammaconley Gammaconley on Feb 11, 2017

Think of the color wheel. You have the neutral white house which is really an absence of color. The great red roof that is leaning toward umber red. The bricks pull in a bit of the umber red and I'm guessing from the photo the grout is a sandy color. Then you have the flagstone that repeats the red umber. Your existing colors are organic which is a great start. Your brick is offset by the white and then the reddish brown brick and flagstone are all. I suggest a soft gray-blue, like a Federal Blue or some people call it french blue. This is a sample of what I mean. It looks clean and classic.

  • Eileen Strohmeyer Eileen Strohmeyer on Feb 15, 2017

I love dark red doors. Prime with black, then dark red.

    • Sandra Sandra on Mar 07, 2017

Me too! Especially with the red roof. OR, a black door. But either way I would plant red geraniums. That pop of red would add a great bit of color in your garden or in pots on your porch. Black pots, red geraniums. 👍🏻 I too love your house. That porch is a winner. Rockers needed.

  • Hat19678767 Hat19678767 on Feb 16, 2017

Red would be very nice and fend shui, red paint also wears very long time an enamel 2 coats.

  • Joseph Glackin Joseph Glackin on Feb 16, 2017

First, do SOMETHING with the shrubbery. It dominates the front, and hides the house.

Then, feng shui says red means "welcome". Among the Pennsylvania Dutch red says you have unwed daughters.

  • TrishR TrishR on Feb 19, 2017

Green or Navy would be nice. If you want bright do Apple Green or Hazy Jade. If you want something more traditional Rich Navy would look good also. All three would pop and then use the colors to find accent pieces. Since you have a front porch you could get a chair with a pad that has whatever color you choose in it or rug, etc. Take a look at HGTV as they have a section called "Outdoor Style" which can also give you different ideas on Curb Appeal. Good Luck!

  • Diana Deiley Diana Deiley on Feb 20, 2017

I am sooooooo jealous of your home and new adventure. Fabulous style. Always wanted a metal roof. And I love renovating. Maybe a black door with an oval window would look welcoming. You can add pops of color with potted plants and flowers. Best of luck. Enjoy your new home.

what did you decide for the doors? i see this post dates back away ...

  • BabyBoomerSC BabyBoomerSC on Mar 03, 2017

Plum/Purple Door. Purple and Red go great together. Add topiaries on either side of the front door and then colorful pots filled with pretty annuals on the steps leading up to the porch.

    Your house will look spectacular!

  • Kim21015324 Kim21015324 on Mar 03, 2017

Depends on which way front door faces! If it faces south.... any shade of red especially a deep red!

  • Johnavallance82 Johnavallance82 on May 08, 2022

WHITE - Add Planters either side or hanging baskets!

  • Suzanne Suzanne on May 08, 2022

I think red. Since you just had your roof done, you could ask the roofers what color red it is and then you wouldn’t have a problem matching it.

  • Janice Janice on Jul 03, 2022

Charcoal gray or navy blue! I'd also paint the window trim the same as the doors, then add a pretty colorful wreath on the door you want guests to use.

  • Johnavallance82 Johnavallance82 on Dec 15, 2022

You could always Paint it Turquoise or Lime Green!
