My house flooded about 7 weeks ago, and we are living in a hotel. What sort of carpet should I get? And what color?

Talk to several carpet stores about what kind to get--and see if you get agreement. Hopefully you will get ideas from someone who has been in the business for some time and has experience with the situation. Also, if there were other houses in the area that flooded, there may be a governmental agency working with a number of home owners on the situation and that agency may be able to make good recommendations.

Okay. But I'm trying to get used carpet. Because new carpet sometimes smells like certain animal urine.

New carpet often has chemicals in it that "off-gas"--smell--which is a disadvantage but they go away with age. So ideally you would buy new carpet that is old enough to have off-gassed before you bring it into the house!

why don't you just go for remnants if you are trying to save money? Used carpet come with someone else s germs and dirt.

Personally, would not buy used carpet. Was the flooding a one-time thing? If so, I'd go to a re-store, etc. and see if they have enough wood flooring to use instead. Then I would just get an area rug to suit your décor. These can be switched around to prevent wear patterns,, Some carpet places also have good buys on end of rolls, too..
