Storage space for beading materials, preferably homemade

All my beads, string and findings are in glass jars, one jar different from the other and are loose on a table. Looking for neat compact storage.

Joann Fabrics has clear rectangular, stackable containers where you can section them off. Label them and stack on a shelf/drawer for storage. They are about an 2inch or so high by about 12inches (guessing here). Also some fishing gear holders may do the trick too.

@Upstate NYer Fishing gear holders might do the trick. My late husband has a whole large toolbox for fishing gear, thanks.

Not knowing how large your collection is I am not sure if this suggestion will help. I store my beads in a sectioned off plastic storage container I bought in the hardware department at Walmart. It is designed to hold screws, nails etc. and has 24 spaces. I also use this storage container to store my accessory jewellery. Here is a link where I posted this idea on Hometalk to give you an idea: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/organizing/how-to-store-accessory-jewelry-3884047 I see you are from South Africa and I suspect that you have Walmart there since it is all over the world.

If you have wall space, you might look for spice racks with clear bottles. My daughter has done this and they look wonderful one the wall. She makes jewelry also. If you can find the old wooden racks, you can paint them and buy clear bottles or use empty spice bottles. It gets them off the desk and leaves more surface area for working.

I use clear boxes with small compartments from the hardware store. They're made to store nuts, bolts and screws but they work well for small stuff.

@Jeanne Grunert They are very expensive here in South Africa. I thought of something fom cardboard that I can section off, just now I thought of corrugated celing board. That should work for many kinds of storing drawers, Thank you!

You can get small decorative glass jelly jars for canning for less than $1 each, and they fit quite nicely in a plastic cart with shallow drawers. I like them because they look neater than miscellaneous jars, and they have wide mouths so you can access what's inside easily. We use them this way for spices.

@Darla I am getting lots of ideas from you people today. The miscellaneous jars are just what I want to get rid of. Thank you.

I keep mine in prescription bottles and put them on spice racks that I find at garage sales. I know they are not clear but you can label the. I also put magnets on some and hung an old baking sheet....Perfect...Jars might be too heave but perhaps you could use more than one magnet.

I made a picket fence style shelving that I hung on the wall... the shelves had holes drilled to hold inverted pop bottle blanks filled with my beads...

baby food jars are pretty much all the same size, so if you know anyone who has a baby, then I am sure they would be more than happy to get rid of them. You can paint the lids then drill a hole in the middle of the lid and also a pilot hole into the bottom of a shelf (or shelves) then screw the lid to the bottom of the shelf..now screw the jar onto the lid, and voila, organized and convenient and also pretty if you dress up the jars with a bit of paint, and they are up and out of your way, but easy to get to...you could easily do the same with small canning jars :) my husband does this with his nuts and bolts and such in his garage. very handy :;)

I agree with Jeanne Grunert. I really like the multiple drawer nut and bolt organizers. The drawers can be removed, so you only need to take out the drawers you need for each project. Since I have so many beads and findings, I have separate organizers for each type: findings, pearls, crystals, stone, metal, etc. A 40 bin organizer at harborfreight.com is on $14.99 right now (usually $19.99).

Thank you Carolyn. I'll do that. Allt he best to you.

Since you said preferably homemade I would suggest this idea, only with baby food jars since they are smaller, and have multiple levels of them. You just screw the top of the jar to the underside of the shelf.
  • It's not pretty, but you could keep things in small containers stored in the pockets of a wall shoe organizer.

  • Look for a bin system for small parts/screws at your local home improvement store.

Form narrow shelves or maybe if jars are small pop them in Cutlery Trays and stack them.

If you have the space, put your beads in plastic pop bottles with the screw caps and mount them on a rack, hold them in place with bungee cord.
