Hat box garden

Any suggestions for making a fairy garden out of a hat box. I have a lot of boxes but aren't quite sure how to make a garden since they are made of card board. Drainage holes and waterproofing etc. Any help?

There are 2 directions you could go. 1) faux it, don't use real plants and you don't need to worry. 2) put a plastic drip saucer in the bottom and leave the plants in pots. Fill in between with rocks and moss. As long as you are careful not to over water the pots to the point of flooding, you'll be fine. They sell the drip saucers at places like Walmart's garden center. They come in a range of sizes to fit most flower pots. Just get the largest size that fits your hatbox and leave the actual plants in small pots that sit inside it.

I think you and Ellen have nabbed it. Go,faux but I feel like I'm cheating the fairies, ha.

I would also go with fake plants. Check out the landscaping products and ideas in the model railroading hobby...they have great trees or ideas for making your own trees, good ground cover and bushes, etc. I make most of mine for the railroad lay-outs and I'm getting ready to do an indoor 'fairy' type garden with the same ideas. Also, you could use the outdoor ModPodge to line your hat box and that might give it some water proofing and then line with plastic and be careful, as others have said, with your watering.

Again Bonnie I thank you for your input. I have already contacted a mini train co. And doll house garden supplies. I'm on my way. Joann
