You will need two horizontal boards to attach the verticals to. Pallet wood would work if they were long enough to span the full width of the headboard. Paint the horizontals to match your wall color so they do not show between the spaces of the verticals. The vertical boards can be attached from the back with screws through the horizontal boards. Just find a length that does not go all the way through. A French cleat would probably be the best way to hang this headboard. Google "French Cleat" for instructions. I'd probably try a dry brush technique with some left over wall or trim paint. Just lightly dip a 3 or 4 inch brush into the paint - an old bristle brush would work best. Dab it around on some old newspapers until it is almost dry. Paint the boards lightly in a hit and miss fashion to achieve the look you want.

@Lucy yaes Lindcurt had some good advice, basically you would put the headboard together the same way a fence is put together. You can get different finish looks by dry brushing, using a wash (very thinned down paint), & just straight painting some of the boards & then sanding over to distress them in spots. If you need longer boards than you can find on pallets you can get individual fence pickets at Home Depot or Lowes for the longer ones you might need.

Whatever you use please make sure that the boards are sealed before you hang them. The oil in the wood could bee very harmful to your health and stain the wall.
