The Flip That Was Almost A Flop- Faux Tile Floor #30Dayflip

I am participating in a "flip your space" over 30 days and am turning an old fishing shed into a potting shed.
And I want it to be a PRETTY potting shed!
The floor of the fishing shed is just a concrete 10x10 slab. Boring and definitely NOT pretty!!
What other kind of floor would you have in a potting shed?
Well maybe dirt or gravel, but the concrete was already there. It had to be something I could put on top of the concrete that would make it look different.
Aww- tile! A tile floor would look great! But I wasn't going to spring for tile- or go to all the trouble of putting it down either for that matter!
What do you do when there is no other alternative for your DIY?
YES! You spray paint!!! That's what I was going to do!
I played around with sizes of squares until I decided a 20x20 square would be about the right size.

I measured and marked the placement of my vertical lines:
Then I repeated the process for the horizontal lines:
Next I started painting. I began with my lightest color first. I have no idea if this is better than starting with the darkest first. This is just the way I did it.

As you can see, I didn't try to cover the entire square. I just sprayed randomly.

Then I put the rust color on. I forgot to take a picture of this step. Sorry :{ I was getting anxious to see the end result!
I followed the rust with the dark grey.

This is where I began to question the original plan.

I had used all the colors I had planned on using and this looked like..... well it looked like...... it was AWFUL!
You will have to go to the blog and read about the anguished process of how to fic this flop, but in the end it was fixed and came out like this!
Does it look completely like a tiled floor? No.

Does it look better than it did? You better believe it! (Those black marks are the chalk I used to mark the tape lines)

The lesson here is not everything that looks like a flop is actually a flop. Most DYI flops can be saved with a little thought and creativity.

Sometimes all that is necessary is finish what you began! I got scared when my DIY didn't match my vision, but all that was needed was an additional color to blend everything together.

So don't give up too soon on a project! And if all else fails you can come ask this awesome Hometalk community for help!!

I did this years ago to my living room floor. It was only temporary until my son was out of his teen years. I painted the floor black, taped it off and then used a sea sponge on the end of a broom handle to stipple the floor with white concrete paint and then grey concrete paint, leaving some of the black showing. After I pulled up the tape I was really pleased. I had many people believe that I had tiled the floor. After he moved out, I simply put down a bamboo floor. It was cheap, easy and served to hide all that teenage abuse. LOL
