DIY Modern Rustic Wall Hanging

I love mixing modern with rustic and was instantly inspired by some wall sculptures I found online. I decided to use those as a jumping off point when it came to create some wall hangings for our master bedroom that could be both pretty and functional. You can view the full post and tutorial over on my blog.
DIY Modern Rustic Wall Hanging
I purchased some old barn wood and cut it down to the size I wanted my vertical hangings to be.
I then sanded the wood down a but and added some golden oak stain on top.
When that was dry I measured a third of the way down the wood, and marked it off with some tape. This is where I wanted to add the gold or copper leaf.
Then some copper foil was added to one board, and gold liquid leaf was added to the other.
When they boards were dry and sealed I screwed in some 6" plant brackets and hung up some lanterns with tea-lights inside. You could also hang mason jars, plants, flowers, etc.
Here are our new wall hangings, which flank the sides of our new large scale wall art.

How did you hang them? How did you get them so flat to the wall?
