Would like to add casters to metal garage shelving. Can it be done?

I inherited 6 of these metal garage shelves when I bought my house a year ago (of course mine don't look shiny & new like the first picture. Mine are harder to see in pic. 2). While they're good for storage, I'd love to be able to move them easily. So I thought about adding casters. Has anyone done this or something similar? Can I just drill through the metal & install large enough casters to lift above the short legs, or do I need to reinforce first in some way? Thanks for any suggestions you may have :)

Make sure they can hold all the weight of the shelves and whatever you may store on them. Tipping over is a possibility!

Or you can run thick board across the bottom, same width/length as shelves and add casters to that. Maybe that ill give extra storage at bottom if legs on metal shelves are long enough.

Thanks Andrea! I had thought of adding wood boards under bottom shelf for added stability too. Appreciate your help!

Hi Mary, you can add casters to most anything, but you will want to put casters that have locks on the shelving so it doesn't move around.

Yes, you can add casters. Just be sure of the weight rating and be sure that you have a firm block surface to drill them into. I'd like 4 screws, one into each corner of each caster you're adding. It'll be great to be able to move them around the garage area for cleaning and reorganizing on occasion.
