Junk Gardening 2015

Gardening season is in full force here in the Fraser Valley, and I've been so excited about putting some of my winter junk finds, like this lovely rusty old mailbox that I rescued from the side of a farm road, where it lay half in a ditch and stuffed full of rotting newspaper flyers. Now it is stuffed full of tumbling petunias.
Every one of these containers was a roadside rescue - gardening need not be a money pit.
Mixing annuals (petunias, pansies, lobelia) among my beloved perennials (day lily, dianthus) ensures that I always have something in bloom, some spot of colour. I love lush combinations of colour, shape, texture and height.
After surviving about 150 years of human use, this sweet little cottage chair was badly damaged by rough movers. So it has been retired to the garden.
Cheerful yellow begonia and a tumble of white petunias
The white iron birdcage (not old, but a good reproduction) and the foxgloves give a pleasing variation in height.
Trumpet full of ivy. I have wanted a trumpet planter in the garden for ages, but I wanted one that wasn't working - beyond repair. And I didn't want to pay a king's ransom for it, either. I was thrilled to find this little sweetie in a local thrift shop a couple of months ago. I think this little ivy looks right at home.
So much more to come!

You can use a mailbox to keep hand tools.....well, handy. Just put it on a post in or near your garden like you would for getting mail.

Yes, there are no end of repurposing possibilibilities for old mailboxes: pet carriers, bird houses, bird feeders, bathroom reading material storage... I do a number of these on my blog.

Yes, on my blog I have numerous mailbox posts. They can be on a post, on a wall, a fence, gate, lockerroom walls, the possibilities are limited only by one's imagination
