Wood Shim Door Flag

Even though I toy with the idea of changing the look of our front porch each summer, I always end up with the same red, white, and blue color scheme! Instead of making a patriotic wreath for our front door, I used some scrap shims to make a lightweight, wood flag to hang on our front door.
I made a rustic, but lightweight, wood flag decoration for our front door by using cheap pine shims.
I alternated the wedge shaped shims to give the flag the effect that it was waving in the breeze.
I used red, white, and blue chalky finish paint to create the design of the American flag. I used just one coat so that the wood grain of the pine shims would show through.
White paint polka dots stand in for the stars on the flag.
The piece is made sturdy by several pieces of balsa wood hidden on the back.
Our new flag hanging pops nicely against our painted blue door.
