I don't know about you, but spring always puts me in the mood to get out in the garden and plant something! This month's Home Depot Monthly Gift Challenge (a monthly collaboration with 12 other bloggers) gave me the perfect opportunity to get my hands in the dirt! It just so happened to be my turn to choose our monthly item and recipient and I chose the good ole’ trusty 2 x 4. The recipient is a “new home owner”. I decided to use the 2 x 4 to make an herb garden housewarming gift! Who doesn't like fresh herbs? New home-owners don’t usually have the time to start a garden right away, so why not give one as a gift?
Most of the tools needed are things you probably already have on hand; tape measure, hammer, saw, nails, metal braces, electric drill, nails, and an electric sander or sandpaper. The materials used can be found at most home improvement and/or craft supply stores. This project called for two 8' long 2 x 4's, wood stain, mason jars, potting soil, potted herbs, twine, and chalkboard plaques. A more detailed list of all tools and materials can be found on my blog.
The process is fairly easy: Measure and mark your 2 x 4′s , then cut to desired length (mine measured 6 ft.). Sand the rough edges, then stain your wood. Once dry, attach your 2 x 4′s together using the metal braces, spaced evenly apart (see photo).Turn the boards over and lay your jars and other decorative items on the wood to get a visual of how things will look/fit. Measure, then mark your item placement. Pre-drill between the boards where you will be placing your nails. Hammer in the nails to about 1 1/2 inches deep. Wrap twine around the base of the wood (see photo). Transfer your herbs into the mason jar, filling with extra soil as needed. Securely tie a piece of twine around your mason jars, forming a loop in the back from which to hang your jars. Leave enough length to tie a cute bow (optional). Hang your jars from the nails. Personalize, then hang the chalkboards.
And that's it! I love that this piece can be used inside or out, and because it leans vertically, it doesn’t take up much space! Perfect for smaller spaces like balconies or patios, or even a sunny corner of the kitchen.
And did I mention it's portable? Convenient if you ever need to move it to another location!
