Creating A Fairy Garden in the Garden

Most fairy gardens that I've observed are separate entities, and while adorable, including a fairy garden in an existing garden space is magical in its own right. Read on to see how I carved out a fairy garden in my current cottage garden.
Believers Only!
While you don't need to purchase items specifically for a fairy garden, these little, whimsical terra cotta signs caught my eye at the checkout and sparked the initial fairy garden bug. If you're on the fence, so to speak, on creating a fairy garden, consider buying a few items to inspire. I purchased this, and other items at a local garden center; all are from JJ Potts and are made in the US. Yay!
Start with a path
I started with a path, a meandering one, that seemed to speak "fairy." In creating the path, I used a lot of curving lines (straight is boring, yes?) and tried to have the path follow the existing lines created in the garden by various plants. Go with what looks good to you!

Once you establish the path, (remember to use lovely, curvy lines!) add some features for interest: a birdbath, a toadstool patio, a little house. A garden, particularly a fairy garden, is all about capturing the spectator's attention, and holding it, by revealing little surprises along the way.

Lovely curves...
Draw the person in, using curving paths. Remember: straight is boring!
Tink, ready for bed under her hollyhock canopy and lambs-ear blanket. When the spectator reaches the end of the path, she'll find Tinkerbell ready for bed, cozy under her lambs-ear blanket. I tend to prefer natural materials in the garden, metal, wood, glass, etc., in the garden rather than plastic or resin, so I plan to create some little wooden structures to complement the terra cotta pieces.

I am creating a new one, too! In a corner, just starting when I find tiny tree or flower odds and ends in the garden when weeding; add them in this corner for plan which yes always has a path! Love yours'!
