OMG! What happened here??

It just looks like I just can't win when it comes to roses. I bought this shrub rose about 3 weeks ago, re-potted it and watered it. Not long afterwards some bug eaten demon started eating holes in the leaves immediately!
I tried treating it with an non-chemical spray that some said bugs won't like...garlic, red pepper, and dish soap, this did not help...the bugs kept chewing. During some more of my research I also read that roses liked epsom salt...gave it less than a half cup.
Now I'm stumped! Roses look worst than ever!!! I'm thinking my rose had some sort of fungal attack before I added the Epsom salt.... I'm just loss .And yes as some of you know by now that I'm a black thumb! Thanks for your input.

bugs were eating holes all in it so I treated it with a DYI bug spray. Than a week later I gave them Epsom salt.
What is happening here?

What in the world? whats happening! This is a week after I added Epsom salt. However the leaves were starting to look strange before I added the salt...but now they are even worse!

When watering the rose bush do you hit the leaves with water? If so it might be your problem. I've learned that the hard way, but mine just turned yellow (the leaves) and died and the roses are fine.

There are all-in-one granular products that will fertilize, combat insects and fungus. They are applied once every 8 weeks. .Look for Bayer or Ortho. They are sold in many places. You may also want to get a pre-mixed liquid spray for roses to go with it so you can get that plant back to health. Try to water early so the leaves are try by evening.

Looks like you have black spot disease. Here is a link showing it. http://www.rosemagazine.com/articles02/pages/blackspot.asp Next time you buy roses, buy some that are not susceptible to blackspot (like Knockout roses) They bloom all summer and never get blackspot.

Well your pictures are not very clear. But I would rule out Black spot. Because it is just that. Black spots on leaves. Yours are completely dying back. You said you used Epsom salt? How exactly? It is best mixed with water and sprayed on the leaves. Did you just place on soil? I would run water thru the pot for about 20 min. This should flush out excess salt. If the roots didn't get burned to badly it should come back in a month or so. Place in full sun and let get dry between watering. Good luck.

you also said you repotted it. plants need time to bounce back. I use Epsom salts all the time. I just throw a small handful on the ground and wait for rain. the bush probably had some issues before you bought it...how root bound was it? maybe the roots needed space.

Sawfly larva has been a big problem this year in Metro Atlanta gardens. That could be what is eating your rose leaves. So far I have not seen Japanese beetles around yet, but the kudzu bugs are appearing on my wisteria now. I love roses so I do not hold back on the heavy warfare. I use Bayer 3 in 1 on my and my clients roses during the growing season, and the past 4 years this has been sufficient. The leaves do not have blackspot. Is it possible that some over spray from a chemical spray got them?
