How do you fix drywall behind a light switch?

Light switch in kitchen will not stay tight for long. The screw holes are too big. It was moved up a little several months ago and was OK for awhile. Now it is loose again. What do I do to fix it?

Are you referring to the light switch box, which is in the wall, or just the cover that is loose? A little more info will probably get you a better answer. Also, a picture of the part that is loose would also help.

It is the cover that is loose because the hole where the switch box is seems to be getting bigger and there is no where to screw light switch cover into. I am afraid to take cover off because only one corner is loose now and I'm afraid if I do I won't be able to get it back on. I am a new widow and live in a rural area but I am not afraid to tackle something new. Thank you.

There are special inserts that help hold it tight. Talk to Ace hardware to learn what will work better for your situation. They are very knowledgeable and helpful.

Maybe you can get some oversized covers, i have seen them in hardware stores and you can look online as well.

cut hole a little bigger and then cut out a piece of gib rock fit n2 hole and plaster over, once dry sand and paint
  • My husband always screws in with a toothpick stuck into hole first, makes it tight, then snap off extra toothpick!
