Pool Deck Makeover

Here is a photo of how our pool and old pool deck looked when we first bought our house 10 years ago. We asked the seller to remove the eyesore, aka above ground pool, during our negotiations. They agreed on some of our requests but ridding the pool was not one of them. In hindsight, I’m so glad they declined!
Four years ago, we decided it was time to rip out the old pool deck and replace it with a slightly bigger (much sturdier) new wood deck. We were considering composite wood decking but even with a small deck, the cost was way more than we wanted to spend on this project. Ultimately we purchased lumber from Lowe's. The best part was after we gave the measurements to their lumber department, we were provided with a project plan for our deck. The materials for this project cost between $1,200 - $1,300. Our pool deck project was done in conjunction with a major overhaul of our backyard. The plan was to have half our yard revamped with pavers (no more mismatched stone materials and uneven pavement). Project Specifics: 1) Remove tree on left side of pool. Sadly we had to get rid of the only tree in our yard. The root system was eventually going to affect our above ground pool plus it provided too much shade for our pool. Without a heater, it would take days of hot weather for our pool to warm up. 2) Tear down old pool deck. This step took less than 2 hours. It was such a flimsy and cheaply made deck. 3) Once we were ready for the pool deck installation, the posts (of course) were the first things to go in the ground. We allowed them to set for 2 days before the full installation began. All said and done, it took close to 8 hours for 2 adults to complete this decking project. Adding palm plants, decorative signs, and flowers around the deck definitely enhances the look of this area.
