6 Big-Impact Garage Makeover Ideas

It started with a few innocent boxes. Then, holiday decorations were conveniently dumped in the garage. Before you knew what happened, the garage was so full of junk that your car stayed in the driveway. Sound familiar?
The garage is an easy dumping ground for everything you don’t want in the house, but do want to keep. But over time, this “organization” degenerates into chaos and wasted space. Why not turn the garage into a space you’ll actually use?
Tip: Make sure your security is top-notch in your garage before pimping it out. A garage is easier for someone to burgle than the rest of your house, so keep safety in mind before hanging televisions or installing anything else expensive.
Here are a few ideas to take your garage to the next level and have a little more fun in the extra space:
1. Brew Your Own Beer
Beer is good. Home is good. Combine the two? Well, let’s just say, happiness is only a home brewery away. You’ll be able to design your own perfect brew, letting your imagination run wild. The possibilities are endless! Plus, brewing your own beer is a pretty low-maintenance hobby. The entire process really only takes a few hours spread over a few weeks.
If you’re up for the challenge, check out the Homebrewers Association for a step-by-step guide to get you started.
2. Build a Bar
Socializing with friends over a few drinks is a great way to unwind and relax, but heading to a bar can be an endeavor (and pretty pricy). Instead of going to a bar, create one in your garage. You can create the perfect hangout spot without leaving the comfort of your home.
We recommend a professional for any wiring or heating needs. But, when it comes to woodwork, paint and vision, get creative and have some DIY fun!
3. Add a Few Games
Here’s a riddle: What’s fun and fits perfectly in a spot meant for a car? A ping-pong table! Okay, so it’s a terrible riddle, but you get our point. Parlor games like billiards, foosball, ping-pong and cornhole are fun and easy ways to add some swag to your garage. Once the game is bought, it’s really just a matter of setting it up – no electrician or handyman required.
4. Start a Hobby
Brewing beer not your thing? That’s not the only hobby worth clearing some garage space for. Pick your poison! Ceramics, wood-working, scrapbooking, painting and drawing, furniture painting and gardening all make our list of awesome ways to spend time. If you’re unsure how to get started, do some research in your area to see if there’s a class you can take for a low fee.
For example, if I lived in Denver and wanted to try painting, I’d check out the Colorado Free University for art classes. And if I was into gardening? I’d check out the Denver Botanical Gardens schedule for upcoming lectures and courses.
5. Add a Home Gym
We all know we should work out more often, but after a long day of work, it’s hard to leave the house again. Make it easier to hit the weights by bringing the weights to you! Creating a home gym is easy – you really only need ten essential pieces of equipment – and you’ll be more likely to meet your fitness goals. Cold Weather Tip: If you live in a cold climate, make sure you include a space heater or two when you’re setting up your gym.
6. Home Theater
Most garages have one or fewer windows, which make it the perfect place to enjoy a movie. To create the ultimate cinema experience, you’ll need a television (we recommend one that hangs on the wall), some comfy chairs, creature comforts like heat and a plush rug, and some bomb snacks. If you want to get fancy, you can also throw in a microwave and mini fridge, so there’s no reason to walk inside during your movie marathon.
How will you get creative?
