Cramped work space and Holiday's! Check out the sponge painted walls, first thing done when we moved in. I wanted to create more counters space and a cohesive island to make a eat in kitchen.
Kitchen when we purchased
We started with kitchen and dining separated by small bar.
Removed bar
Removed bar and low and behold there was tile underneath. Didn't have to match old tile.
4 habitat cabinets for $90.00! Score
Took a bit of shopping to find these four cabinets the same door design as existing cabinets. My husband and I build a base for them out of 2x8's which enabled us to mount to floor. And create height, being a tall people I wanted height.
Purchased 100.00 in wood for countertop
The neighbor offered to create the island top for me out of 2x12's from the lumber store. He glued and planned it for my 5'x7' countertop. It was huge had to bring in two pieces and hijack my son and his buddies to move it in.
2 x12's in place
Just had to sand before my other son was coming over to distress and stain and coat the top the bar top.
Distressed wood top
The countertop turned out perfect! My son stained with Minwax wood finish early American and did the first coat for me. Then over the next couple days I lightly sanded and applied two more coats of Minwax Helmsman spar urethane.
Finished
We used barbed wire, waffle hammer and anything else we could find for distressed look.
My vision was coming to life, now to face the sides with the free pallets boards I drug home. My dear friend was an electrician so he crawled in the basement and gave me 4 plug in the side and hung the $5.00 pot rack I found at a yard sale. All it cost me was taking the four of us to lunch.
Painted cabinets
I painted all four cabinets the same color of rust oops paint at Home Depot for $5.00 for a fresh and blended look.
125 year old bead board cabinet
Besides having 8 more cabinets to my kitchen for my gadgets, now with more space in dining I was able to move my favorite 125 year old bead board cabinet that I made my husband drag home in front of someone's house for free into dining room so I now had a pantry. I painted it the same oops color I did the island cabinets.
Pallet board finish
Got the pallet board facing on exactly how I Had envisioned it.
Galvanized garden edging
I found some galvanized garden edging at yard sale for a buck, perfect finish to my island trim.
Next was to find 6 bar stools for seating on a budget. As I looked around it was at the least was going to be $600, so I got on Craigslist and found some outdated barstools she wanted $120.00 offered $100 and she took it to get rid of them.
Ugly bar stools but cheap
I knew I could repainted base but wasn't sure I could recover the seats. I got on the web and found site for painting fabric.
So off I went to Home Depot to buy a gallon a latex paint, and Joann's fabric to purchase fabric medium. I will have to post the bar stools in another post

Why didn't you re-use the old cabinets from the peninsula/bar? Also, how did you get those 2x8's to stand up and become a base for the new island? The end result was perfect!

Where does your wiring come from? Is it through the floor?

She bought 4 cabinets w/the same door design as the ones installed, made a base to make them taller, a neighbor made countertop out of 2 x 8's, she used pallet slats to cover up where the cabinets were put together and had someone install the power outlet (the power outlet she didn't go into detail as to if it comes through the floor) and she said chair pics. Would be on a separate blog.
