You might try looking for a vintage dresser, Susie. They tend to be a smaller size that works better in a room than today's furniture, most of which seems to be supersized.
If you have a closet of any appreciable size and install shelves or drawer units in there, this could solve your problem.
Most folks use a dresser for just socks and undergarments...which really do not take up that much space.
Maybe you could consider wall mounted cupboards or add a set of shelves on your wall with baskets to store things in? Just thinking outside the box of a way to free up floor space ;)
Lingerie dressers are tall and narrow and perfect for small spaces. They have plenty of drawers so you won't be losing out on the amount of clothes storage that you might need.
i like the idea of laingerie dressers but where do i find
I would try a local resale or Antique Shop (many I have seen are from the 70's) I have redone several over the past years, although they are not readily available in my area, they do pop up every once in a while for sale. Possibly you could search craigslist or any other online ads (www.ebayclassifieds.com) for your local area.
If you don't mind buyine one obline here are some options: http://www.etsy.com/search/handmade/furniture?q=lingerie+dresser&view_type=gallery&ship_to=US
I have a small bedroom and put shelves in the closet. I use baskets and boxes as drawers.
If you have small nightstands beside your bed, and if you have room, consider replacing the night stands with slightly larger and taller chests. This could give you a place to store the items that are in your larger dresser, and still serve the purpose of a place to put your lamps, clock, etc. The chests do not have to match, but do need to be similar in height. You can paint mismatched chests to give them cohesion without a matchy, matchy look. Larger chests as nightstands are so much more practical. Shop garage sales and thrift stores. Find one you like, and then just keep looking until you find a second one of similar height. The hunt is half the fun!
