I tried to talk my mother out of a white kitchen. It shows every speck of dirt.If you do paint it white, use an enamel paint,so you can clean it with ammonia and water.I personally love color,so I would paint the walls a different color.Joan Rivers always said to paint your kitchen pink,it makes you always look good.It really depends what colors you like and what the adjoining room colors are.I have had a beautiful white cottage kitchen which was lovely,my favorite cabinet color was a soft beige. Its neutral and calming, for some reason,it doesn't show the dirt as much.If you use a good neutral enamel paint on the cabinets,it is easy to change the wall color to update it.Black enamel is very dramatic and neutral also.your choice also depends on the style of the cabinets and the handles on your cabinets? Can you send us a picture?

Also I forgot to say this is a house is over 40 years old and the living room is not open only by a door opening. I wanted something neutral so I could accent with colors that are in from time to time and thought white would be nice, but beige does sound nice.

A tip about painting cupboars/cabinets white. We tore our kitchen down to the studs and built the cupboards/cabinets ourselves. We first painted the bare wood with a primer, then an oil based paint, within 4 months the paint started to yellow. I am a housekeeper by trade so this was not due to poor cleaning habits or smoking in the home. I went to Benjamin Moore and asked for advice about the yellowing. I found the best paint I have ever used! This paint is magic, no brush strokes (i did use a smooth cabinet door foam roller to do the doors) Drys extremely hard & cleans up with water! It runs around $50 a gallon but is well worth it! I only use a damp cloth to clean them. I've never once had to use any chemicals to get them clean. Good luck choosing a wall color. :~)

I'm a firm believer of color - even if it's just an accent. I lived for too many years with "renters white". I painted the cabinets in my kitchen a flat white and the doors a pale gray. Used bronze pulls and hinges. My accent colors are black & red. And because the base is neutral, I can change the accents to anything I want fairly easily.

If you paint your cabinets white, paint your walls another color. Otherwise you could run into a situation where it is just to stark. Darker colors do better broken up so you could paint your cabinets (black or brown) and then the walls white. All of this takes into account that I don't know your kitchen layout, appliance or floor colors.

There are lots of shades of white paint. We painted our upper '80's oak cabinets Silky White. We chose a medium taupe for the lower cabinets and the island. The walls are a pastel taupe and the woodwork is decorator white. We used brushed nickel cabinet hardware on the cabinets. Our house was built in 1896 and I think the differences in colors help it to have an eclectic, evolved look.

White gives a really fresh clean look! I used porch & floor paint for durability & shine on the cabinets! You can add a splash of color in a back spash😉, or in accent pieces on the counters.

I can not decide whether to buy white cabinets or not. It is a problem for what to paint the walls. My living room is Hale Navy from Benjamin Moore. Love that. But what for kitchen.

If you want to stay white, try a bright white for the cabinets and more of a winter or creamy white for the walls. Had this combination in a dark bathroom at one time and really liked it.
