Juniper trimming
-
Karen on Jun 24, 2015I've got too tall junipers I'm waiting to trim after hurricane season here. I read extensively about this. The idea is to cut the main trunk 6-12" below the height desired (I plan to cut at a 45° angle), then the upright foliage will disguise the cut area. Cutting the trunk will stop the upward growth. A bare spot may mean parasites of some kind have infested. My lawnservice guy sprayed with the appropriate stuff but trees may not recover -- one type of parasites are not treatable but it's hard to tell the difference so all you can do is try. I've also fertilized with that which is recommended for junipers. There's some new growth but of course slow. As much as I love them, if by next spring they are still real patchy, I'm going to replace them since they are in front of my house. Good luck with yours.Helpful Reply

Seena on Jun 25, 2015my only question is what's your weather like right now? IF it's super hot & humid, I would hold off pruning until September~ish. Whenever we prune any plant, tree etc., we force them to 'heal' themselves. That said, it takes all kinds of energy for plants to do that. As long as your bare spots are from improper placement and not an insect (mites) I would leave it be until the temps have gone down some. Good luck, Junipers are lovely plants :)Helpful Reply

Time With Thea on Jul 11, 2015I only have spreading junipers and each new year they need a little trimming but I only do it the Spring or in the Fall.I live in a very dry and right now hot climate. I am hoping we get some rain soon. Since it is so dry I do really water them.Helpful Reply
