I want to change the living room to a French country look but am dealing with a large brick fireplace that could be eye catching IF this redecorating is done well.

Since there is seems to be just little burst of color with French Country my thoughts are that the Peach should played down... using a very, very light lavender grey wall color and white trim when ever possible...would love a pic when finished...

@Anne Alexander This seems like a do able suggestion for me. Thank you. The fireplace wraps around and covers part of the kitchen wall. I can work with it in the kitchen but have been uncertain about the living room. I will take a before and after photo when I am able. I do not start the project till fall.

Is there any reason you can't change the color of the brick? We had orange brick on our fp, but changed it with masonry stain to a dark color and then painted it a lighter color.

@D & K Dennis, thank you for your input. I would have been disappointed to have put the time and effort into a paint project and then have the paint change as the fireplace was used. Roxie

If you google "whitewash brick", it will open up a world of options for you and it looks beautiful! It isn't as dramatic as paint, and will be beautiful with any decor.

I would also agree with Lisa and Debi53. I would either paint it all white or do a whitewash, that way you are free to choose a wall color that goes with your French country decor instead of trying to find a wall color that goes with a peach brick fireplace which could be difficult. Good luck! Kathy in Lake Forest, CA

Walls could be soft green, or light gray, ivory, very pale yellow-white. I think doing the walls easier than the brick.

"Peach" fireplace? That is such an outdated color from, I think the early 90's. My "now husband" had a house with peach carpet and drapes with blue accents. Good lord, I hated it! Why worry about the walls I would first paint the fireplace white and go from there.

My suggestion would be to use a high gloss gray for the walls that has a bluish tint to it. Then I would use a chalky gray to trim out the fireplace surrounding it with a 1 1/2 - 3 inch molding trim. It will set off the fireplace and draw your eye to the walls therefore muting the peach but using the warmth of it to accent the gray. The high gloss brightens the walls and helps soften the peach. Best of luck with whatever you choose to do!

@Rhonda Davis Thank you Rhonda for your recommendations. I will save these replies so when I have the access to my house I can make a decision with some good input.I like the idea of the gray colors using the different sheens!

How nice that you get to fix up "your" home. To bad that mom can't. You made sure of that.
