DIY ~ Mailbox Birdhouse

When I found an old mailbox at a garage sale I decided to see what I could make from it. With just wood scraps, the mailbox and some paint I made a Mailbox Birdhouse!
Mailbox Birdhouse ready for residents!
Here's what I started with! A mailbox with no flag and some scrap wood torn out of a friend's laundry room.
Do you see a birdhouse in this? I did!
Using power tools, I cut a wood insert with an entrance hole and screwed it in the mailbox opening.
Then I spray painted it yellow!
I spray painted the birdhouse, but leftover exterior house paint would work great too. Then I drew stylized flowers on with pencil and painted them in with permanent acrylic craft paints.

Because the mailbox is metal, I placed it in the shade! It is now a pretty garden accent as well as a new home for the birds!

Cute idea! I have two old mailboxes just like this one that I painted then mounted on old used 4x4 posts one of which still has a bullet holes and one bullet still embedded but showing because it nearly went thru the wood. I put a pretty mailbox wrap on one of mine but just left the other one painted solid shiny black. I set one at the end of my front walkway flower bed and the other one is in the back yard in a flower bed bordering my patio. I use mine to hold my small gardening tools when not in use. We have a 5 acre yard so having one in both the front and back yard saves me lost of time and wear and tear on my legs not having to walk back and forth when I forget to get something that I need on the other side of the house. They look pretty and are handy and I decorate the one in front each Christmas with boughs of spruce, ribbon and red silk poinsettias which makes it so pretty and one of the first things you see when coming up the walkway. Now I'm going to have to find another old mailbox so I can made a cute birdhouse out of it. We have a huge barn in our backyard and I've put in flower beds all across the front of it facing the house and added cute barnyard decorations on the face of the barn to add more décor. I use rusty items there like old garden tools, plows etc. and I even have an old galvanized washtub complete with it's stand and drain hose sitting in the flower bed that I put a large flower pot in so as not to ruin my tub. I think a mailbox birdhouse would go great in one of those flower beds. Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing your wonderful idea!
