Definitely Red Husker Penstemon. Yes they do seed but you have provide enough room for them as they are not aggressive seeders and can be easily run over. Mine almost were swallowed up by some Bee Balm this year.

In NZ we call it Strobilanthes Anisophyllus Purpurea. It grows to around 1mtr and the foliage colour deepens to dark burgundy in full sun, but in shade it reverts to green.

Shari C. The Beard and Tongue Plant is the same the Penstemon. I also believe that's what you have. Mine just grows and blooms in a 30% shaded area. Always looking great and never needs special attention.
