What is the next best thing to marine paint?

I'm getting ready to build a 12 flat bottom boat (http://www.vintageprojects.com/boats/jon-boat-plans-build.html)as a project with the kids to keep down at a small lake. It won't stay in thewater but will be left outside. If we paint it with marine paint, the paintmight end up costing more they the boat. I'm wondering if there is analternative that will work pretty well. There is a paint for the bottom ofpools that is cheaper. And I have some epoxy patio paint downstairs that my Daddidn't' use. I'd appreciate any thoughts.
