Rv conversion into craft room

We are still in the beginning process and want to remove the carpet and put down laminate floors. Any tips on this process in a rv will be appreciated. The rv has med. oak cabinets all around the room. Would you go with a lighter or darker floor?

We have cherry cabinets throughout our RV and have chosen to go with a lighter flooring so that it will brighten things up a bit. I am opposed to painting our beautiful cabinets.

@Lettetia Elsasser I don't want to paint cabinets either. Just not sure what to put on floor. Do you have slides and did you do that also? We have no idea of what we are doing when it comes to putting in a floor. Do you have a photo of your cabinets and floors I could see.

We have a super slide in our living/kitchen/dining area. The floor in the kitchen/dining area are natural stone tiles so we are looking to do the complete living room/slide area with light colored flooring that is the same height as our stone floors.

@Lettetia Elsasser We only have a small amount of floor in the kitchen area and all other is carpet. We looked to see if the tile went under the carpets but it didnt, We are worried about the slide sections.

What a great idea for a craft space! Will you be keeping it in one location or moving it around? I think light flooring would be a good choice. Forgive my ignorance of most things RV, but what slides are in this application?

@Annette Pugh Casanova Thank you for the explanation! Now the term slide makes perfect sense to me! I think you'll have a great time in your new craft space!

This is an awesome idea. I need more space too.

@Clearissa We checked into adding a large shed and all that would be needed to make a craft room and it became quite costly. We have tried to sell the rv with no luck as we no longer travel wiith no luck so rather than just let it sit and go unused we will make the livingroom area my craft area. It will be smaller than the shed but has electric, etc already there.

I wish I had a whole different space other than a small bedroom. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful my husband finally relented and let me have that bedroom. I do not have the mess in the living area now. I would go with a light wood for the floors, if you have a slide out I would also do it is wood, so it would be a cohesive floor throughout. Good luck and post pictures when finished.

@Kathy Meador Wells Mine will probably be smaller than your room but I can leave messy. I will just have to dream ways to store things. That will be part of the fun.

We are in the process of remodeling our rv, fifth wheel. We travel quite a lot and I just couldn't take the brown anymore. The oak cupboards are now light cream, countertops a darker formica, rubbed bronze handles, flooring Allure Pacific Pine laminate (Home Depot). The floors are very rustic plank looking and very easy to install. We installed this flooring in our daylight basement several years ago and it still looks new. As for decor, our colors are apple green and tourquoise...and we love it.

The truth is, I wanted to get rid of that oak so much that it's worth the work. We're using Behr paint plus primer insemi gloss finish. First we deglossed all the cupboards, followed by washing with TSP and rinsing. It's taking 3 coats of paint and one coat of Polyurethane varnish. It's a long process, one I don't want to ever do again, so we're making sure we do it right. We put a small kitchen in our basement a few years ago and oak cupboards, which we painted...so far not a chip on them. I think the secret is taking your time and allowing plenty of drying times between coats. We put a sheet of drywall on saw horses and lay the cupboard doors on that to paint.

I am not the one that has done the redecorating of my cabinets. The picture at the top is my cabinet color. It was bndrollalong that answered me with the remodeling. Good Luck.

Sorry Annette. Hopefully bndrollalong will see this and post a picture of her painted oak cabinets.
  • I would put in a lighter floor to keep the place feeling airy and bright!
