Swimsuit and Towel Rack From Reclaimed Wood

I found this piece of wood when I was cleaning up the yard at our lake house cottage. As soon as we saw it, my sisters and I knew exactly where it was from.
It was from a bench my dad built by our dock when we were kids. 10 years ago, the beachowner's association made him remove the bench, but he kept this piece of wood, buried under weeds in a scrap pile.
When I found it, I knew I needed to restore it and put it to good use. I gave it a whitewash coat of paint,
painted "drip dry" with white paint, and then gave it a coat of polyurethane.
I used new hooks that are created to look like the twisted wire hat hooks from the 20s and 30s.
I scuffed the finish up with coarse grit sandpaper, and then spray-painted them.
The hooks just screw into the wood.
Now, it hangs by our back door to hold the wet swimsuits and towels after a trip to the beach - and it's also a little reminder of a childhood memory. Head on over to my blog for more information on whitewashing, and the other DIY projects from our cottage.
