New siding, what color should I paint the wooden porch?

I've had new siding for about six months. It's barn red with ivory or beige trim. I'm wondering what color to make the porch? What color to make the door? I had thought of a beige-painted porch with a really dark green door, but I am wanting ideas.

    What a gorgeous home Lee Ann. I think I'd pick a not so light color from the brick for the porch deck and stairs, which I'd add a solid risers to dress them up. You could do the risers and the railings to match the trim. A dark green would look very nice for the door.

    I love your house. First, why not enlarge the deck a bit so it becomes functional as a front porch? I would paint the deck a soft brown. Maybe paint the door a shade of brown to compliment the deck. Forrest Green might look nice as well for the door.

    I don't think I'd use brown ... a little too dry for such a charming house. The green on the door & porch, the lattice the beige trim color, would create more contrast and eye catching. Enjoy.

    Add risers to the stairs, paint them, and the railing the same color as the other trim on your house, then paint the porch, and stairs, the front door too, a complimentary color for your siding. It depends on how much 'pop', you want it to have. A really big 'pop', would need a contrasting color, on the color wheel.

    I would match the porch rail and lattice to the trim color to make it cohesive, and go with the green on the door, the floor of the porch and the treads on the steps. I would also pull down that piece of railing across the front and pull out the old steps and instead put in steps that span the entire width of the entryway. Add risers that will be painted the trim color. Add railings to both sides of the new steps and with the added width you'll really open up the entryway, have room for a small vignette in the corner and be able to add pots of plantings to the steps for a gorgeous cottage vibe. Building new stairs is really easy, and doesn't cost all that much. I put new stairs on our deck in an afternoon for less than $100.Yours would be a bit more because they'd be so much wider than mine, but if you can swing it I think it would look amazing.

      @Maggie Hugie Outside is a full wooden door with a window in it. Inside the enclosed porch is an old door with four light panels at the top. I had thought to paint them both dark green.

    @LeeAnn Gerleman I would keep the railings, & steps the same ivory of the house trim, and also add risers to the front of the steps to make them look more substantial. Maybe paint a poem or saying on the front of the risers welcoming guests to your home. As for the floor of the porch & your door, I would paint them any color that makes you happy!

    I agree. the trim and railings should be the same color as the house trim. I like the idea of adding risers too. Instead of a green door (which would be beautiful) maybe consider a slate blue for the door, the deck and the treads. Here are a couple of examples.

    I may differ some but in decorating you always use 3 colors main color being red, accent color being (I would use white, on railing, porch, same as windows). Third color is that POP of color - which would be your door. When I look at this I automatically thought towards navy blue, something that would look good w/the red. If you decorate more in the greens, make sure it compliments your red. The lattice I would paint beige, (pop of color) to your porch and if it was me I'd paint the door beige, (I know I suggested navy door). Either way I would get a large pot of flowers (adds interest and a finished look) to your porch. Have you thought about adding a flowering plant between the two plants under your window? Not too large that the ones beside it looks lost yet add some height to the front of your house. You have an awesome house, good luck on whatever you choose.

    Here's my 2 cents...I would paint the brick the same color as the beige trim work. This also balance out the colors. For the door...I would paint it black. You don't see it very often, and black goes w/ everything.

    Love the look of your home. Would paint the same colour as the house, and as other suggested paint the steps and railing your trim colour and the door a diff colour.

    Ivory is so "passé". I just added blue shutters and stars to my yellow siding house and made it the talk of the neighbour. Go wild, get curb appeal, either a real dark forest green or a nice pale yellow, for the porch and window contour. Post your final results please.

    I would definitely paint the porch in ivory to match the trim. I think that would make it look fresh and would finish the house off nicely. For the door, it's a bit more difficult as I would grab a bunch of paint chips (the big ones) and stick them on the door to see what looked good to me. Looking at your house in the pic, I would go for a mocha colour for the door. Then add in those accents to brighten it all up, big urn in the front left corner with flowers in the summer, greenery in the winter, wreath on the door, seating etc. Have fun. The house looks great so far!

    I am afraid I would not be worried about changing up the colors.. just match the house,, but spend some money on some good landscaping. It looks blah in front of that beautiful addition. And yes.. the door could use some pop. Otherwise I love how the roof lines of the garage and the house all seem to meld. Landscaping will fix so much to keep it from looking to plain in any season.

    I say paint the porch the same color as the trim. Or as close to it as possible in a deck restore to help protect it. and I'd paint the door in a Rusty Red. But that's me :-)

    Paint the porch the trim color - for the door? I'd go with a really dark matte navy blue. Really make it pop and then the house has an Americana feel with the barn red, tannish white and navy. But this is coming from a woman who just painted her front door hot pink.

    Why not paint the rails of the porch the same color as the trim, to keep the continuity going. Then paint the floor and door the dark green?

    I say white also. You may want to do something fun by painting the floor of the porch in a green and white or black and white diamond pattern. Make sure you put several coat of clear deck polyerthain . Sorry I know I spelled that wrong

    I WOULD NOT PAINT THE FLOOR OR STEPS WHITE did it and it always looks nasty. a green or turq would be a nice pop.

    I would paint the railings and ballister the trim colder and stain the porch floor and steps a dark deep brown and a pop of color on front door

    Paint it black or the darkest green cut with black. Landscape architects use this trick for fencing to have things fade away. It will allow the pretty house to come forward. Frame out the lattice. Then get some inexpensive boxwoods to soften the base of it along with a flower bed.

    I would paint the trellis & rails, beige, the rail spindles & door, barn red, & keep the floor & steps a natural wood stain, much easier to upkeep than paint, add colour to the steps with pots painted beige with barn red pattern, filled with winter flowering plants or grasses, change the plants for summer if need be, put a pot on each step on the side where there's no handrail.

    Steps and lattice - light porch paint grey All trim, windows, door frame. Actual door - Jet black high gloss enamel. I can see no guttering on the house. Spring for those also and paint white.

    We have a house similar in style and also our porch had been enclosed, ours has the original breadboard ceiling and it is a beautiful blue! So I painted the floor a lighter shade of blue to compliment the ceiling and I painted everything else a warm white so my chairs and accessories all look great on the porch now!

    Same as the windows and trim. I think you will then be able to see it. Great house but the porch is lost. Just my humble opinion!

    I would paint the rail, lattice ect. all the same color of you houses trim and brown for the steps and floor of the deck as it will not look so dirty in the winter time.

    Beige or wood front porch floor, white railings, country green front door. New pot for in front of railing, a focal point, in barn red glaze. Can put a dwarf spruce in it for winter.

    Before I could recommend a color I would want to know the 'function' of the porch? Is it a heated room as if it's part of the house or simply an enclosed exterior porch? What are your intentions for use? What color is your garage door?

      @Glenda phiilips My house used to be light gray with white trim and a dark gray deck. My daughter originally thought of the red, since we are in Iowa and almost all houses are white, she said to go red. I thought about it, and figured my neighbors would be horrified, but went with it anyway. And my neighbors have all told me they wished they'd been more colorful in their siding choices and love the red.

    I would go with white like the trim, and a back board on the steps would also look good, boxed in with another rail on the left side. Would also look good to deck across under the windows if you like sitting outside and want to go to the expense, or some flower boxes under the windows with trailing ivy

    Paint the Porch Railings same as house Trim. Floor of the porch and lattice same as house color. Door could be any bright Color such as The slate Blue, Lighter Rusty Red or Terra cotta, or if you really want to wake up the Neighbors go Turquoise or Burnt Sienna or Just a fresh coat of stain on the Wood Door and protective coating like an outdoor polyurethane . I looked through the comments above, didn't notice what color your Garage Door is... It would look great in Stained Wood Too. so would the Steps...

I think if the Door of the porch and the Steps and interior Door and the Garage Door were stained to match each other it would really POP .! ! ( EX: light walnut and then a Glossy protective Coat... and it would look Rich ! !

    Agree with the beige for the railings and, perhaps, the lattice, too. Paint steps and backings a dark color...the red or a deep brown. The green door is a good idea as red and green are opposites on the color wheel but I would either make it a little on the teal side or a darker sage green and not too bright.

    The rails should be the same color as the trim on the house (I would add a rail on the other side of the steps). Steps, flooring and lattice should be a dark color - deep red of the house or even darker.

    Ivory-beige for the porch and lattice. For the door, go with a warm gold, similar to the brick, or maybe dark chocolate. Cozy and sweet house, by the way!

    I agree with the ivory-beige for the porch and lattice, but I love your idea for the dark, forest green for the door. Leave the trim around the door and windows the beige, though. Remember, you can always repaint if you if you decide you don't love it. Paint is an easy fix.

    Have you given any tho't to painting the brick on the house? I think if it was the same color of the house, it would enlarge the appearance of it, by not having so much of a chopped up look. Then the porch could be almost any color you want. Trying to match it to that brick with so many other colors is just too much. Paint the brick first and go from there.

    The porch should match the house and window trim. But the front door should be a color that pops. I would go get some paint swatches and hold them up to the door before I choose. Since you like green, get several swatches that you like. Then decide.

    I agree with Vicki, match porch to trim then pick a fun color for your door. It's a small house and having too many different colors will result in a mish-mash. I can see a forest green on the door - that would go nicely with the surrounding colors

    I love the look of your house. Someone suggested you paint the brick - leave it as you have it. Your brick and the new siding colors complement each other very nicely. I'm not a fan of lattice underpinning so I personally would replace it with the same siding you have used. I'd paint the floor, steps and the new underpinning the same as the new siding. Pain the rails the same as the trim and leave the door like you have it. Also if you can afford to expand your porch about a foot or so all the way around, add a couple chairs and a table with a plant; welcome mat and your done. Very cute home.

    My thought.... Definitely paint the pourch the same color as the trim .... The entire pourch, steps, lattice.... everything. This will brighten and give a clean look. Then you can choose to do any additional creative painting at a later date... Such as a pattern on the floor, or a design on steps. From the street you want to see a clean, bright look.

    I would first update the railing to tie in better with the style of the home, then I would make the stairs across the width of the front of the deck, remove the lattice and create screen panels to allow air, but keep critters and such out, add risers to the steps and soften the ends of the step by rounding them. Now for colors, I would paint the steps/deck the same color as the siding and paint the railing the black which is classic looking. Can't tell the detail if any on the door, so I give you two design options, paint it the same color as the trim work or if there is decorative trim to the door then paint the door the trim and add the siding color to the decorative trim. If the porch door is just flat, you can add decorative trim to it, which would give you some character, and finally add a wreath to your porch door.

    I like using either the Cream of the trim on the porch railings, or possibly Charleston Green. Charleston Green reads black or almost black, and I think that color would work really well on your home. If not the railing/porch, then perhaps on the door and maybe a window box out front? I also like your idea of forest green on the door. You might find some combo of the Cream, Charleston Green and a little lighter green that works. Adorable house, by the way.     I would use both colors...I would paint the decking and stairs brick red, to help cover the dirt that will be track upon it. Then I would paint the trim the same color as the house's trim. Another thing I would do is paint the lattice brick red. For a front door there a lot of colors to choose from, but I myself would want to go with a cross between a blue and Navy blue - not to light, but not to dark. I'm sure what ever colors you choose it will look absolutely beautiful. =)

    Now with u remembering U asked...lol..I would move the stairs over to the driveway end of the porch. Stain the flooring the red cedar look and the railings I would paint white after I put wide top rails on the spindles. This I think would go better with the house. The door could be the same color as your siding or leave white. Good luck and let us know what U decide, plz.

    I would paint the porch a contrasting hunter green and use the same color to paint the inside trim on the windows to tie it together. I really think the contrast with the red would make your whole house pop! Please do update this post when you decide what to do.

    Paint it a fresh bright white,including the brick facade fresh white,and then patriotic blue for your door,then you could add some americana objects for the porch,wreaths on the door,a tiny bench painted red,white and blue, I love Americana,can you tell?You could also put an outdoor floor mat with the same patriotic flair,to keep the porch from getting too tracked on!

    Paint all the railings on the porch and stairs the same white to match the trim on the house; paint the steps and deck a medium "evergreen" shade, and paint the door a dark "evergreen" or a dark red or wine color. If the budget allows, I think a striped awning on the sunroom windows would be beautiful...find an awning stripe you like, and take the colors for the steps/porch floor and door from the stripe. Or, a less expensive option would be to make long drapes for the interior of sunroom in the awning stripe and take the accent colors for the porch and door. Have fun!

    I think you can continue the trim color and/or the house color and either would tie it in beautifully...If your budget allows extending the brick at the base of the porch & closing the front steps will give it a great finished look!! try 10x's paint for durability it works great combating the elements!!!

    Paint the porch that creamy white (as shown), and the porch-trim the color of the existing house. If you change the house to a color you like, still paint the porch creamy white, and the porch-trim the color of your choice for the house. Have Fun!

    I'd paint it the barn red to match the house. The beautiful front windows are the standout feature and a beige porch would draw the attention away from them.

    I agree with painting it to match the trim color. Right now it just blends in; painting it the cream color would make it pop and would help diminish the presence of the lattice work around the bottom.

    I think I would go with a 2 tone porch....paint the railing to match the house trim and the floor a tan to match the brick.... or you could even do the floor a barn red. Lattice would be the floor color.

    Definitely the beige or cream to match the trim with a charcoal/black door. Ace Hardware has a color called "Ace of Spades" It is a grayish black. It is more of a charcoal. It would be beautiful and any Spring, Fall or Christmas wreath would show up on it beautifully.

    Paint the railing to match the house trim (cream).. paint the floor and lattice a darker color. The floor wont show wear or look dirty that way and the lattice will disappear.

    I like the idea of matching the house trim to the rails, and painting the deck and lattice a darker color. However, since it is ONLY paint.... You could use multi-colors on the balusters. You can paint the deck and lattice a bright canary yellow. Who says you have to do the expected? On the other hand, if YOU don't prefer to be different on the exterior of YOUR home, that is YOUR choice! Whatever you do will be wonderful, or you can just paint another color! Good luck!

      @Tracey I've had a lot of suggestions for cream or beige for the top railings, etc. and even darker than hunter green for the porch itself, then the door the same color. I could just get the beige and do it easily without worrying about slopping. Then I'd only have four posts to be careful of and paint the whole rest of it dark green. Plus I can use the beige on my picket fence between the house and the garage. I'm starting to get excited. But as I am on disability, I need to do it a step at a time. Thanks.

    whatever color you paint the porch, I hope you choose to enclose steps and sides of porch (remove lattice) It gives it a more finished look. If you keep the lattice, paint it the same color instead of leaving it white.

      @Laura L VanWormer I agree that it would look more finished if I enclosed the base of the porch. However, I'm on disability, I know I could probably get the money, because it shouldn't be too expensive. But I don't know about being able to do all that. I want to leave the steps open because there are two cats that go under there when its cold. I've checked and they don't mess anything up under there. In Iowa it gets really cold in the winter. I could paint the lattice. That might pull it all together better. Thanks .

    I like color so I'd paint the door a beautiful shade of Teal or Turquoise (compliment the red) and the porch and railings, I'd match with the trim. (the lattice the same color as the floor of the patio) Cute place. :)

    I would go with BMoore Sharkskin (dark "graish" green)...including the lattice....

    2nd idea, you could also fill in with cinder blocks solid side facing out. And paint the same as trim and leave one out on the side where it won't be noticed so the cats can get in and the blocks would block the wind and snow.

    Looks like brick on the front of your house, is it? you could match that color, or match trim,but hard to keep white clean. Bright colored door too.

    I would go with your trim color. Lattice deep deep charcoal (doesn't look dirty like black) , and same for door. Door easily brightened with almost anything, and a reclaimed-chair and small table, sprayed-with -Rustoeum wowsa color on the porch. You can buy one a year at yard sale for virtually nothing and have fun with it. Have fun.
