You will have to strip the existing finish. There is a product called minwax that sells the whole process.

Zinsser puts out product called BIN Primer which needs to be used first then you can paint over it. I found this at Home Depot.

I painted cabinets in a previous house. I would not do that again...the cabinets yellowed and peeled and required frequent touch ups. They were difficult to keep clean as well.

Coreena I painted dark, almost black laminate cabinets over 15 years ago. They held up with only a couple of chips for over 12 years...I changed them after that. I used liquid sandpaper and steel wool to clean them, and wiped them well with a damp rag. Then I painted with a good primer, and finished with Home Hardware paint. I wouldn't go pure white, if you are afraid of yellowing. Mine were a sage green. I have also restained oak. You just need to sand well or remove the gloss with the liquid sandpaper and steel wool, to provide a good solid base for the primer.
