We are in the country and the deck is about a foot off the ground.

  • The first thing to remember is to keep it clean and eliminate any standing water issues - for example the ground under the deck needs to slope outwards. Pollen, leaves, dirt... should be swept off, etc... Clean your deck - http://thehtrc.com/2010/cleaning-your-deck-common-issues-and-prevention (yes I am cheating on this part) but I recommend you simply start with a hose & deckbrush (a deck cleaner might be a good option but it is hard to say based on what you consider "beginning" After you have it clean - consider finishing it with a mold/mildew resistant finish & then see above on the remember part

Make sure it's not too shaded, cut down overgrown shrub that make it too shaded. I had to do that with my deck, then put product to kill moss on the deck, follow instructions. Floss any boards that are too close together with a saw blade or a paint scraper.

Powerwash and I use vinegar to kill the mold. Great for the environment and pets. Vinegar is a strong antifungal, just be careful around any plants you want. Vinegar will kill them, yet, a great weed killer

You must have greenery and shrubs near deck.remove first. They sell a product you can hand spray for mold or it also comes in a bottle you attach to your hose for larger areas. It does not have bleach and does a great job removing mold. I always thought bleach was the best choice-I was wrong. This stuff is great,a lot less caustic too. Not too expensive.

Vinegar will stop the growth, fill a hand sprayer and use as required.
