What can I do to get rid of this? We are under a reno/restoration of a 1956 cottage that has never been touched.
This is where the 'heat' comes out, there is one in every room.

This is what was in the house back in the 50's and this the the 50's ceiling. (not touched since then I'm sure)

The 50's did not have this type of grill installed. This was a retro fit of sorts. I assume the house had some sort of different heat prior to this. IN any case, you can purchase new more modern types of grills. Most likely you will need to speak to a AC company to purchase them as round register grills are not all that common in home centers. Was this just heat, AC or both. Where is the system located? Attic, outside? There may be other concerns that you might want to look into before you worry to much about how the grill looks on the ceiling.

There is really no concerns with a roof top system. Only that the system is most likely over sized to make up for the fact it is in the weather and the additional heat in the summer and colder weather in the winter requires it to make up for the those heat and cooling loads. Also because the system is located outside and so are the ducts, be sure that they are tightly sealed to prevent any dust, pollen, and outdoor pollutants from entering into the system. This includes the heating and cooling system also. The access doors should be really tight and ideally sealed using a foil tape to prevent any air from getting in and or out. Check around all of the grilles to be sure there are no water stains. If so, check the roof opening carefully to be sure there are no leaks.
