Replacing old sliding doors to walk in closet

They are mirrored and the frame and the runner they sit on are rusty and dirty.
Double mirrored doors in white metal frame that is getting rusty.
This is the track it runs on. Tile in bathroom and carpet in walk in closet.

  • Buy a new track, a new set, or go with a different type of door - of course any change to the track size means redoing the carpet. I would recommend a bath mat or some other way of cleaning up the water - if that is from condensation, make sure you use a bath fan & let it run at least 15 minutes after you are done

The track is easily cleaned. If it's the mirror that you don't like, and you don't want to replace them, you can cover it with paint, wallpaper etc

I installed tracks (Johnson Hardware Model # 111722DR Internet # 100657986 111SD Series 72 in. 2-Door Bypass Track and Hardware Set) and used 2 regular slab doors instead of sliding doors. It makes the bedroom look quite a bit richer as the doors have a lot of substance. The track kit is expensive, but it is worth every penny. They are almost like the barn-door type doors you see a lot of now days.

There isn't a lower track to collect dirt!

Most by-pass doors hang from the top now days with a center guide at the bottom so make a wood sill if needed .

I would take out the sliding doors and install french doors, which gives you better access to everything in the closet and you can then add mirror to the inside of the doors giving you front and rear view of your outfit or hair. Take the measurements of the opening after removing the old sliding doors to your local big hardware store and see if there are doors to fit the opening, and/or you can use bifold doors and convert them to french doors. Talk to the person in the door department at the hardware store, for they are a great source of information, that is how I found out about using bifold doors to create french doors.
