It's worth a shot if you can keep the cuttings from drying out. It's not ideal. You are better off propagating earlier in the summer or late spring.
  • Yes, but a higher percentage will take normally in spring and summer. They will still root now but a bit slower and definitely use a rooting hormone, keep moist and in shade. Covering with clear plastic, creating a little greenhouse should increase your chances, just keep the plastic off the foliage and keep out of the sun or you will have fried green gardenia!

I started some last week using tip cuttings from some plants that were storm damaged. I use a potting mixture of half sand (coarse) and half peatmoss and Root-tone hooting hormone. I use a styrofoam cooler as a rooting box and cover the box with a clear plastic bag. Keep the cuttings in an area with good light but out of the sun. (In my case that's in the carport.)
  • Sounds like you have done this before. I like the styrofoam idea.

Really? You can cover with plastic? It does not suffocate them?

Do you think this will work now? I've still got rooted clippings in water, but not sure what to do with them and don't want to kill them. Any thoughts?
