See below for the step-by step process on how I transformed this standard off the shelf children’s set into a one-of-a-kind custom Lego table.

We have had this Ikea LATT children’s table for a few years, and it has gone through the ringer and one of the chairs was destroyed so we only have one. It is a great table and is the perfect play table for my son. Most of the items in our home are for my daughter and I wanted to create something special and specific for my son. I knew that this table could be completely transformed with a few coats of my favorite spray paint and then had the idea to take it one step further and turn it into a Lego table.

See below for the step-by step process on how I transformed this standard off the shelf children’s set into a one-of-a-kind custom Lego table.

SUPPLIES + TOOLS

Krylon Fusion All-In-One Matte Pale Sage spray paint

Sanding block

Drop cloth

Scrap pieces of wood (for propping up feet / legs)

8 Lego mats

X-acto knife

Glue

White Caulking

Step 1: Repair and Sand. First, we filled in any damaged areas with wood filler and lightly sanded the table and chair.

Step 2: Prep. We then taped off the areas that we didn’t want to get paint on.

Step 3: Wipe and clean. I then cleaned the entire piece with water and paper towels, removing all dust and debris from sanding.

Step 4: Prep for painting. If you are painting in your garage, I like to put down a drop cloth. A pro painting tip is also to prop the furniture up onto scrap pieces of wood so you can get to the low areas and legs.

Step 5: Apply the spray paint. Spray paint is by far my favorite method of painting! It is very easy to apply, dry’s fast, and leaves you with a very smooth surface with no brush marks. I used my tried and true Krylon Fusion All-In-One in this beautiful Matte Pale Sage color. Shake it well and apply in very thin layers. This is the key with spray paint just do thin coats and allow them to dry in between. Keep your spray light and consistently move your hand. I did about 2-3 coats.

Step 6: Cut and Prep the Lego mats. I purchased the standard Lego mats and measured and cut them to size to fit the tabletop using an x-acto knife. These are plastic mats so using any type of saw will just tear them apart. The x-acto knife worked perfect and I was able to score them and then snap apart to get the mats to perfectly fit the surface of the table. It is important to arrange the mats so that the cut size is on the edge, you want the finished sides to touch so you don’t mess up the spacing of the Lego mats. This will ensure that the Lego pieces will be able to fit even along the seams.

Step 7: Glue the mats down. Once everything was cut and dry fitted to the table, I then used gorilla glue to attach the mats to the table.

Step 8: Fill in any gaps. I used a white caulking to fill any gaps that were left between the table edge and the Lego mats.

That’s it! The entire project took me a couple hours (including drying time), and it was well worth the effort. It looks like a completely different table! The kids are obsessed with it and have already spent hours playing on it. I also repurposed an old craft storage drawer by adding wheels to the bottom, so we are easily able to store all the Legos. The best part is when they are not using the table this unit can tuck underneath the Lego table!

Great job! We loved making our Lego table when the kids were little. There were many hours of enjoyment playing there.

This table with drawers is very smart, as it keeps the activity contained and off the floor, yet doesn't stunt creativity. When play time is over, as the storage system is color-coded, even the youngest child can learn to tidy up.
