This is in the basement attached to the cinderblock wall with a side that opens and latches. It doesn't go all the way to the floor.
Can you help me identify what this cage in our basement is?
We'd seen this from the basement and didn't know what it was. It is a wood open slat "cage" with a latch to open the side door. Icky spider webs is all that's inside now- ew! But we decided to rip out the built in bathroom vanity upstairs above this and discovered the hole that goes down into the wood "cage". It was covered up by the vanity so we never saw it from above until now. From the top it's lined with a little metal sheeting. Any ideas? Don't think it can be a laundry chute because the wood "cage" is too narrow and small and why lock it?Doesn't appear to be a heat or air duct since there is a wood "cage" below.
In the basement looking up...icky spider webs
This is what we discovered in the floor underneath the built in vanity...

I think it was a clothes chute
Laundry Chute
Does it go up to the floor above? Probably a laundry chute is my guess.
Garbage shoot.
Maybe it was a part of a chimney years ago and when it was no longer in use, the owner got rid of the chimney and covered the open hole in the ceiling with the vanity.
The laundry was downstairs and this is the laundry shute
I must admit, I clicked on this to see the "cage" and wonder what weird stuff was going on before you.. but lucky you, everyone thinks it's a laundry chute! Yay you!
Yep. Laundry chute.
I was thinking the same thing as Jessie. But I sure hope it was a laundry chute.
