Can you build a storage bed with bookcases?

We have three bookshelves that aren't optimal as bookshelves anymore. Their shelves are all bent/dipped from weight over the years. But could you use the sides and tops of them to build a usable bed frame? I'm trying to get more storage in my room and like the idea of a storage bed.

If you mean you'll be replacing the shelves, then it's possible. It depends on the strength of the sides, tops and especially the material you'll be making the dividers from and how close you space those dividers. More information is needed before I can get a true answer. Can you share a photo of the idea you are looking to copy and possibly the bookcases or at least dimensions of the ones you want to use? What material is the bookcase made from? What type of material you are hoping to replace the shelves with? How many dividers you plan on using?And how many bookcases do you have and what width are they?

Why not use the book shelves as drawers under the bed, and get a reasonably priced bed frame with free standing legs? All you would need to do is to lay the bed down, and put castors at the bottom. I am also interested in your reply to Becky ...

Depends on how you're going to do this and the material of the book shelves. If they're solid wood, go for it. But if they're made of wood product (which I suspect they are if you claim sagging shelves), I'd consider Valerie's idea and just lay them flat under a bed. Of course, they have to be of a width and height that could fit under a bed with at least 4 inches of clearance from the edge of the bed frame to the side of the shelves to avoid jamming toes into their sides. And for ease of sliding them out, maybe affix furniture gliders to their backs (the plastic ones for carpeting, felt ones for non-carpet wood floors). A bed skirt should conceal them nicely and keep them relatively dust free. In fact, I would even dedicate a box of press-n-seal to keeping their open face sealed.
