A large bulletin board (like the kind schools have in hallways and classrooms) can at first seem like sort of an outdated idea, but for teens it can still serve as being an instant sharing central place, and discussion starting place. It can be used for artwork, members family/ baby pictures, hand made crafts,t-shirt slogans, flyers, posters.
Having an area on it that is magnetic would be functional and fun, and having an interactive whiteboard area would be practical also.
I found this really helpful! http://www.jacksongalloway.com/news/2014/9/2/10-tips-for-renovating-a-youth-room
Since it's for the youth - why not get their suggestions?? You can always modify the suggestions, but it's for them so let them be creative.
We have just finished our youth room project on a small budget. The chairs were still good, so we recovered them (searching on-line and in stores for best fabric at best price...of course keeping in mind the ages for the fabric). Painted the whole room, to include podium, etc., put down new carpet, and even found sofa covers at Big Lots for the two sofas. It turned out beautiful with the help of quiet a few members volunteering their time to do what they could (painters, sewers, etc). Get your youth and congregation involved and it will be lovely.
Thanks everyone for the great ideas. I'll share pics when we get everything done!
