How should I redo the paneling in my basement?
We would like to give our huge basement an update without breaking the bank. I decided (and convinced husband) that we should paint the walls except for the one behind the bar. That I want diagonal wood in a stain to match the bar. Any suggestions?

Painted paneling looks great. Clean with TSP Sand off sheen and prime with Oil based primer and paint with oil based paint. Enjoy your new basement.
Paint paneling
Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Kilz. Then paint like painting regular walls. Acrylic latex paint will work. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with non shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.

A good primer will get you off in the right direction after which you can use any wall paint.
Depending what walls are?? Lightly sand? clean well, prime, paint. Wall behind bar use either low cost wood flooring or even wood look tile planks these are really nice easy to keep clean lasts forever. I used in one of the bathrms looks great and easy. Check resale stores(Habitat for Humanity) Returns at hardware stores, craigs list, garage sales, scrap lumber sales at hardware stores etc. any of these for (used/overstock/ returns) tiles or wood to use on wall. Maybe even do bottom front of bar so it matches wall behind the bar.
Go ahead and paint! A friend did their knotty-pine kitchen, and it looked so fantastic that we painted our paneled basement. It looked like a brand-new space, and it was much, much brighter also.
