What is the best way to give a Paneled basement a fresh updated look?

My husband and I are going to be updating our basement this year. It is dated - has a pool table I'd like to remove, along with lots of dark paneling. What is a fresh way, that is not too expensive, to freshen up the look? We live in a Ranch home, so the room we'd like to re-do is a good size.

If you do not want to remove the paneling, paint or white wash it
Hi Katy. You can paint the paneling a white or off white color and add a chair rail. This would brighten the room up.

Spackle the grooves in the wood, lightly sand, then paint or wallpaper. You could also use fabric such as burlap & apply to wall with starch.

You can simply paint the paneling or cover with sheet rock and start over essentially.
filling in the grooves is a great idea, inexpensive but time consuming, after that lightly sanding. From there you could wallpaper, paint, maybe a mural to draw the whole room together with a common theme.
Panelling can be painted. You can fill in the lines first but it is a lot of work, but does look good after it is done. You will need a wood filler because spackle sometimes cracks. You will also need a good primer such as Zinsser Bullseye1-2-3 Primer which can be tinted to your finish coat color and then apply your final coat.

Wipe down with TSP. Prime with Kiltz. And then paint. I would leave the lines. My brother painted his and it looked really great.
