Retro Ashtray Table

Vintage ashtray stands are too cool to discard! They have such great lines and designs and make fantastic side tables.
This was in my neighbor's trash and after checking with them, I grabbed it! Love the lines and shape and I immediately wanted it!
Enter an old lazy susan and I was ready to create an outdoor table for my gazebo.
I found a quote by L.M. Montgomery (writer of the Anne of Green Gables books) and after printing it out in a retro font, I used graphite paper to transfer it to the table top which I had painted and distressed.
In Microsoft Word, there is an option to "insert Word Art" which is how I got the words to print out in a slightly curved shape. This allowed me to print out several words at a time that curved nicely around the shape of the wood. Lay a piece of graphite paper (available at any art supply store) UNDER the words and trace. (Be sure the graphite is laying against the wood and not against the paper! You don't want to spend all this time tracing, only to find you've transferred nothing to the wood!) I used a pen to trace over the words to transfer to the wood and then using a fine brush and black, acrylic paint I painted the quote.
I sealed it with a clear coat of spray acrylic as this may be exposed to the weather.
The base was spray painted with a high-gloss red paint.
The lazy susan was attached to the base with E6000 glue. The end result, a trashed ash tray and a discarded lazy susan become a fun, outdoor side table!

Very good job - thanks for posting the tidbit about Microsoft Word "Word Art". I'll have to try that out.
