About 100 yrs. ago, I purchased a cabinet for over the toilet and it holds things like Q-tips, cotton balls, an extra roll of toilet paper and mother misc. things that are only used in the bathroom. I store and keep my makeup in a drawer in my dresser.
We also have a small bath room we have been sharing for 21 years. We use bucket with our stuff in it.
We had this problem at one time. We had a wasted space next to the tub that was about 10 inches deep and the width of the tub so we bought a narrow book shelf, some inexpensive baskets and used it for storage. Also, we purchased a cabinet online (after looking for one free being discarded that we were going to repaint), and used it for items up up on the wall next to the mirror. These closed doors contain shaving tools, medicines, and any toxic thing a small child might try to taste. Some people use a spring loaded curtain rod to put up on the back wall of their shower/tub and use it to hang the needed articles to bathe/shower from it with S hooks from a home improvement store. I have also seen where people put up storage above their commode. I do not personally do not like any storage above the commode because eventually something WILL land in the bowl. Also, Narrow upright shelves can be added in small areas where you have even a foot of space to put in tall, upright shelves. I roll our towels and wash rags to store in a small basket in a corner for handy linen/towel needs. I hope some of these ideas might help you too. Don't forget you can store items under your master bed for the master bathroom in wide/flat tubs on wheels. These can be purchased at Walmart or a home improvement store.
Walls! When you're dealing with a small amount of space and need storage.. look to your walls! The other wonderful to use space is the area over your toilet. I bought a beautiful over the toilet shelf unit on Amazon that's a wonderful way to add storage. Add a few pretty containers to hold your stuff and you have a beautiful addition to your bathroom. You can round out your decorating with a plant, even a few books for those who like to wile away time and relax on the pot. lol It's also a great place to store extra towels - just fold them neatly so they lend to the decorative feel.
We have shelves above the toilet and on the wall opposite the toilet. Baskets keep it neat. I keep my makeup in a small drawer unit that fits on our sink counter, which is about 30". Going vertical with hangers for baskets, etc. can make a huge difference.
Don't forget a medicine cabinet over the sink. It can hold a lot and has a mirror on it. A cabinet over the toilet to match your vanity also gives you lots of storage.
Put in some between the stud recessed shelving.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsrjXGGSqGM
I also like the shelf above the bathroom door..... https://www.google.com/search?q=pictures+of+bathroom+above+the+door+shelf+storage&client=opera&hs=w3Z&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjR2eu05fzZAhVN02MKHQA9A48QsAQIlQE&biw=1205&bih=574
