Boy is it ugly! The white coordinates with nothing. Can I paint this plastic and with what?

  • I would not paint it. I would hide it with a beautiful shower curtain. I have seen the after affects of painted tubs and showers and I would not want to deal with the prep and the harsh chemicals and paint. I paint just about anything but not bathroom sinks, tubs, or showers. Unless you pay a professional to redo it with a guarantee, I would not attempt it. good luck on whatever you do!

Thank you for your warning. It sounds like the potential to make ugly even uglier would be high. My shower curtain hides a multitude of sins now -- it might as well continue. Now onto painting the best curtain ever.

You could probably hide the side wall with a panel of some sort. I don't think paint would hold on plastic in such a damp environment. We had our worn steel tub refinished, and it held up for years, but they had to etch it first with acid, and I don't think that would work for plastic.

I don't know how handy you are, but we pulled out our old tub and then paid for a plumber to hook up the new one we bought (we could have done it, but our local codes specify a plumber). We then did the new tile ourselves. Regular size tubs are relatively inexpensive.

Thanks Donna. I appreciate the words "relatively inexpensive". That leads me to the thought of Habitat for Humanity. Huh !?!

You can paint tile - this is not my site, but is one I pinned on Pinterest to think about for my inlaw's house. It has some good info: http://www.domesticimperfection.com/2013/11/how-to-refinish-outdated-tile/ oh, just saw that I didn't read closely enough and you are wanting to redo the actual tub - but this says you can do the tub, as well. It'll give you ideas, anyway.
