I have ugly old vinyl flooring in my bathrooms. What would be a good fix? Something different to put over it? Paint? Paper bag technique? Help please!

Although I have never done it myself, I have seen many tutorials here on HomeTalk, the Internet, and on YouTube on how to paint vinyl floors. Designs can include stripes, squares, or even patterns done with large stencils. I would suggest using the search bar at the top of the page ("Painting Vinyl Floors" or similar wording) for ideas and techniques. Like many painting projects, how well it will hold up probably depends on how much effort you put into the prep work, and choosing the right paint and protective top coat. If you are interested in the paper bag technique, you might be interested in the multiple posts this blogger wrote about the good and bad points of her paper bag floors. Although her sub-floors were concrete, I'm sure the techniques and products she used could also be used on vinyl. http://www.domesticimperfection.com/2014/11/guest-room-paper-flooring-and-why-im-disappointed-with-it/

Why don't you find some OTHER vinyl flooring, squares, and just cover it? It seems the mess, work and not trusting how long it may last would be more of a pain than just re-tiling over. They make some really nice ones, including a mexican tile vinyl. Just check on-line.

never tile over tile/flooring. It's a disaster to clean up when new flooring needs to be installed. Just my thoughts as I have learned..lol

I had ugly vinyl flooring in the kitchen of our previous home. I used a marine paint intended for boats to retard moisture and prevent chipping or peeling. It's a tad pricey at around $75.00 here in CA but lots cheaper than new floor. It stood up to two dogs and the kids for over 10 years before we bought our present home, so I'd go for it! Be sure to polyurethane for durability. Make sure that the paint and poly are compatible. I've also used the marine paint on our cement front porch and it works wonders!

so I painted the old vinyl flooring in my tiny bathroom, not sure what happen, but the floor is tacky and pet hair and dust just sticks to it including the little rug. Any thoughts how to fix this floor? The paint I use was a porch and patio paint and that may have been the problem. I look at peel and stick tile and don't like any of it. New floors are not happening at least for another year out. If someone has some suggested I am open to fixing this problem. Thanks!
